Pretty photo of grease eruption from CV boot

There is a large rip in this inner boot. Yes, I did a 2" lift recently. Should I just get the OEM replacement tomorrow and put it on or order some kind of upgraded/'extended' boot set? I have a trip coming up this weekend (4th) and not sure I can get anything other than OEM in time. I tied a red shop rag around it and its containing the eruption somewhat for now. Pretty sure it's a simple tear and leak due to age combined with lift. Anything I need to consider? Interesting color.....

Too bad Toyota engineers didn’t foresee this issue and pack CVs at the factory with tie-dye grease.

You could get some NAPA CVs in the meantime and rebuild your OEMs with extended boots or whatever you think best. Buys you more time for research.

Yeah that sounds like a plan. I just had a look to see how my rag held up on a 40 mile drive home - it didn't, and I noticed that the metal clip on the inner end of the outer boot had popped off too. Zip tied that but it looks like I need to have a more thorough look at what's up down there. I've been lucky to have work every day but it doesn't leave much time to perform any repairs during the week. Got no garage to work in, anyway.

Thinking about a remanufactured OEM axle - anyone have an opinion?

+/- 150.00 plus core.

Edit - Noob question: I can drive this around in RWD for a few days while i wait for the part, right?

Some guys on here have done years on ripped boots. Other than more grease coming out, you shouldn't run into any problems. If you were going to re-boot your current axle, that's a different story - you want to keep it as clean as possible inside.

I would reboot your existing axle. Boot kit is cheap...maybe $50. Labor is not if you pay someone, but the OE axle is the highest quality available.

Yep I will do the OEM axle when I have some more time. They are all re-manufactured anyway.

yes you can...you can even blow out the rear and drive in fwd...meaning put it in 4wd and let the front get you home with no action in the back...i know..as I blew a rear ujoint. disconnected drive shaft..hung it out of the way and let my front end bring me home
so yes.. reversing things....if front is not working...the rear will get you home too unless things are really locked up on the cv's and front bearings...if not...you should be able to driv ehome even if you have to diconnect the front drive shaft...this si why some guys swap to the taco front locker hubs..even eliminates the cv's
