Definitely fix the high idle issue, then just take it in to get tested. Sometimes the numbers will help you to see where to look next for repairs, in case of failure.

I'm pretty sure I've fixed the high idle issue. Based solely on the dashboard tach, it looks like it is reading aprox 750-800 rpm's.
I wandered into another forum and 1 guy suggested that I put a gallon of paint thinner into the gas tank right before I go take the test. He claimed that paint thinner not being a petroleum based product, will burn super clean. Seems kinda crazy to me but I thought I'd ask folks here at T4R.
One question though. If I do happen to fail the smog test, does that become a red flag for future tests ? I'd hate to become labeled as a polluter.

Traveler74, I think you are way over thinking this. Pick a smog station that does a free retest, the second test doesn't cost you anything. Don't dump anything in your tank and just get it tested. I have 340k on my 97 and I am terrible at proper maintenance and it has always passed.
If by some chance it does fail, come back here and we'll help diagnose.

STOP!
There are literally MILLIONS of cars on the road in California that pass without any games. Take it in, pay your $35-50 and be done with it.

You haven't lived in California long, have you... (see: gun laws, building/zoning laws, other environmental laws, business laws, etc.)
Part of the smog check is a full visual inspection of any part of the car that is related to emissions. Cracked hoses, (non-approved) modified/replaced components, etc. are all checked - or at least, should be.
My Camry has a Celica GT4 motor that never was in a US-delivered car. It will never (fully) legally pass smog anywhere in the US. It blows clean enough out the tailpipe that I don't feel bad about owning/driving it though... And daily driving a 270hp+ AWD Camry is worth the hassle of finding the right shop every 2 years to get it passed.
-Charlie
PS. Overall, I'm happy about the smog laws - the air in the Los Angeles area is SO MUCH CLEANER than it was 20-30 years ago. I can exercise outside and not have a burning throat and asthma attacks these days...

No, I have not lived in California long. I have been living as an expat, in The Philippines for the last 20 years, and I just returned to the U.S.
I gather people are tired of me asking about CA smog test. It won't happen again.

I was kind of curious to see what a gallon of paint thinner would do to a 5vz. Assuming you meant “mineral spirits” and not acetone or xylene or one of the other common solvents.
I’m kind of thinking a gallon of mineral spirits might not be that big of a deal. It shouldn’t melt any of the viton and plastics used in the system. Might cause detonation though, maybe clean the injectors.
These rigs only hold 16 gallons or so. 15:1 ratio seems rather strong.
Could be ho hum, or maybe be one of those “hold my beer” kind of events.

Yes, I totally agree. I will not be doing that. I just wanted to know what others thought of that rather strange idea.

4oz of acetone at fillup doesn’t hurt anything.

That alone should be enough to answer your question about paint thinner.

Yes. If it's stock it'll be branded. I just replaced my cat and on the bottom it's etched with the CARB executive order D-193-100 showing this model of cat is allowed for my vehicle in the state of CA.
Basically the visual inspection is just that, they look for any modified or aftermarket parts on your engine that affect emissions (intake, exhaust and vacuum routing). If there is an there's no CARB sticker they fail you. Just like that.

And there's some of us that pass with "illegal" parts and pass just fine... hehe
