Yes and No. Easy, everything is lightweight tools are small. Downhill from there, it's a PITA job.

I just removed that box while i was replacing my evaporator and expansion valve. It's not too hard but you do have have unplug your ac lines in the engine bay that go into the firewall and into this box. Which that means you have to evacuate your AC and get it vacuumed and charged back up after. Might as well replace your expansion valve while you have the box open since it's a pretty cheap part. Would probably also replace the drier since you're opening up your AC system and that will start sucking in moisture. It's also a really cheap part.

I've never tried to remove that part on it's own, but even with the whole dash taken off it's a chore. Personally, I'd try and seal it up with some sort of thick tape or auto body filler then paint as long as your A/C is unaffected.

Yeah - to fix that, I'd say some black gorilla tape and call it a day... Otherwise you're going in... deep

No need to take off the whole dash. I don't think it would even help much. It's not that bad for an under dash job. I just replaced my evaporator and expansion valve. The four bolts are a bit of a pain to get to, but it's way easier than most cars.
That said, some black duct tape would probably do the job.

I pulled the seat, center console, glove box for the room your gona want it.
You can get to it with glove box out that all the farther you want to go.
Expansion valve - - It aint broke don't mess with it, when it goes change broken box.
Make sure drain is working n Duck it !! what I'd do.
Here's another way to look at it.
Evac system, change drier at/ near 200k mi, get box out, clean evap of 20 years of sheite, change box.
