Trans fluid to use

2001 Toyota 4runner 4X2

I went to oriellys to grab some trans fluid and the guy at the store said I couldn’t use the valvoline one (see photo) and recommend me the orielly brand atf III instead. I asked why I couldn’t use the valvoline brand and he said it’s what the computer said. I watched timmys video on the trans filter and fluid video and the valvoline one was what he used. Can I use the valvoline one for my ride? Thanks guys

I’ve never seen a Dex/Merc that was not DEX 3 compatable.

Yup exactly. That’s why I’m asking the forum, cause I’m confused. Maybe he was new?

Trans fluid to use

I’m ready to do a fluid drain. Not completely, just in segments until system is somewhat has new fluid. Then after a month or so I’ll change the filter with an oem one from the dealer. But gotta be sure I can use the valvoline one.

I would be more inclined to use the Valvoline Maxlife if I was going to use Valvoline for my ATF.

But no, that Valvoline Dex/Mer stuff is fine.

Pssst... here's a tip. Don't take car advice from the 20-something year old behind the desk. I unfortunately have to correct them on a regular basis and also remind them of what tools they have to rent since I rented it from that exact store just a few months prior...

Of course one could also say don't take car advice from random people on the internet. I digress.

People are Gun Shy. If it says DEX III compatible it’s good to go. I’ve used Walmart’s DEX III for many flushes.

Our rigs got a dam drain plug. It’s easy pesey doing a drain and fill.

Alright that’s what I’m talking about! I’m more confident now hearing from you guys. Rather take advice from guys who have experience than someone who relies on a computer. Thanks again.

Yea, Google experts are not the best source of real-time advice. I’ve used Walmart’s SuperTech Dex 3 for years.

As long as you do it every 30,000 miles you are good to go. It’s got a drain plug, so drain it and add a gallon and be done with it, I do it every other year.

The guys behind the desks are generally idiots. Use Valvoline. No reason to be using the cheap ass stuff.

I use the red jug of fully synthetic Valvoline Max Life ATF.. I have a 1998 with 184k and my tranny runs great.

I did 3 full drain and fills, which dumps about 3.7qts each time from the pan, i did THREE of these over a 700 mile period to a do a full "swap" of the 12qts or so that is in your tranny and pan at all times. Did this opposed to a flush which im not a fan of.

It’s been a long time since you could walk up to the counter and hand the guy an old part from your rig and he brings you the new one without asking questions like 2 door or 4 door.

I've been surprised by my local Napa. Stand-up bunch. Always down to talk about the technical nitty gritty.

I have an account with the local Napa. So, they are my first choice for parts.

But, local motor heads working at a autoparts store is a dieing breed.
