Hey guys! Long time, no talk.

Anyone here mountain bike and have a 1Up bike carrier?

2″ Super Duty Single – 1UP USA | OFFICIAL SITE

I am looking at their Super Duty single carrier. I have a 4x Innovations swing out loaded with a 315/75/16 spare. I am trying to figure out what sort of clearance I am working with.

There is about 3" between the bottom of the spare and the top of the receiver hitch. The spare comes out about 14" from the receiver hitch.

I imagine that I will probably need an extension. In addition to an extension, they also *can* reverse the side plates that angle the rack up so that they angle down. I am wondering if I will need to do both, or if I can get away with a 1Up standard super duty single bike rack.

I know it's a long shot, but more people here have 4X Innovations swing outs, or other similar swing outs, that might be able to chime in. I should be able to make theirs work. It is all metal construction, and happens to be made in the USA to boot.

I have the heavy duty2x carrier, but im all stock. I absolutely love the rack, youre making the right choice going with 1Up for sure. I run mine slammes all the way back, but if I wanted to i could move it out about 6 inches. What kind of measurements would you need me to get to help you out?

Hey itskohler, thanks for chiming in. A measurement or two would be awesome! I found plenty of 5th genners using the 1Up, but very few people are running any type of swing out situation. A few are using a CBI swing, but they seem to offer some receiver built into one of the swing arms.

So I think the magic point of reference that I might be looking for is, what part, if any, is the the rack in conflict with at 3 inches higher and 14 inches post receiver?

My guess is that it very well might be the side plates that the platform pivots on, or the bike platform itself.

I think I will definitely need a hitch extension that should provide 7" or so of extension. I am just trying to figure out if I will need to custom order the reverse side plate configuration.

I have a different setup but maybe it will give you ideas...I used a a drop for clearance...my swing arm clears the wheel

I've been drooling over the 1up stuff forever. Still rock a Thule T2 though (both hitch and roof setups), as it fits my needs just fine.

I just did a quick mock-up so disregard it isn’t really attached. I grabbed by race bike because it is the lightest. I calculated that I would need a 10” drop to clear the lowest part of the swing arm/tire by measuring from the bottom of the tire. While the tire is lower than the arm (just a bit) the arc of the swing arm and the position of the tire (more proximal to the hinge make the tire irrelevant...meaning the arm will always be closer to the bike racks highest point than the tire if that makes sense. I didn't know that when I was guessing what I would need. I could possibly just make a 8" drop work but I wasn't interested in taking this back and trying. For you with a 315 as opposed to my 285 it might matter more…hard to predict...your rack is different too. The 10” drop I went with is way overkill as it is for 10K lbs. After mounting this way everything cleared (by a little over 2”)


The 10” drop wasn’t snug and the whole setup wobbled a bit…that was fixed by adding a hitch tightener which you can see sitting on top of the drop (not attached in the pic).



That solved the problem…everything is snug as a bug now. The tightener I purchased is here:

When it is folded up the bike rack is maybe and 1" or so from the tire on the swing arm....really it just fits.

An unrelated bit of data: you can put the 1-Up in the 'down' position with a bike on it and the hatch clears it with the rack as far into the receiver as it will go.

I have been looking at those, but it is hard to see where the contact would be, (if it would), between the bottom of the spare tire and the top of the down plates. I think I will get a longer extension to clear the space the 14" spare will need so that the first bike tray isn't touching the rubber.

I don't even want to be able to swing the tire carrier. That's just not going to happen. LOL. It will work, but just drying to figure out if I will need to order the reversed side plates.

Thanks man! That gives me some ideas. I know there is a way to make it work. I wouldn't mind having the bikes sit higher with the normal config vs. having to sit lower with the reversed side plates.

It's a Ripmo AF. Carbon is a bit rich for my "getting back into it" blood. Hahaha. It has been a lot of fun. Let's put it this way. My last new bike was 1995, a GT Avalanche. So I am getting used to FS, disc brakes, new geo, 29" wheels.. where does it stop? lol. Just getting my legs and lungs back.

Nice! - I took nearly 8 years off due to MTB racing-related injuries and having very young kids that I could barely pick up due to being so racked-up. Been back into it since 2015 and never gonna stop! 4X4 and MTB can both cause terminal upgraditis.

Good for you man! Life is full of distractions and obstacles. I am happy to be getting back into it. I had a blast riding in college. All the new advancements in bike tech has made it feel like a different world. Bikes aside, it's nice just being out there in the woods again.

Is there room on the swing out arm to weld on a receiver? Or do you specifically not want to go that route?

I don't think that would work very well for the 4X Innovations bumper. I could be wrong, but we'll see.

So....

I just threw down a lot of money on a 1Up Super Duty Single (silver) and a Super Duty add on. I looked and looked at all their diagrams and watched the Jeep video again. I "think" I might get away with the normal configuration and an extension. I realized that because I have a full swing arm, I would never be able to get away with tilting the loaded bikes down, then swinging the arm out of the way to open the rear hatch. Things are a lot easier if you don't have a spare tire carrier swing out. LOL.

I wanted to be able to keep the bikes mounted up as high as possible. Hopefully with a 12" extension, I should be able to clear the bottom of the rear tire AND be able to mount a bike without fighting the spare for space. Fingers crossed. LOL. If it doesn't work, I might just be able to reverse the side plates to allow for extra clearance. But I don't think I should have to.

I'm glad I ran across this thread. I don't have a swingout tire carrier, but I've been looking for a new bike rack.

I just ordered a super duty double yesterday too. I hadn't seen the 1Up racks before (I've been out of the mtb game for quite a while). I got a new bike this summer, and am looking forward to riding more.

I was very surprised to see the tracking info for my rack already. With the backorder status showing on the 1Up website I wasn't expecting to see the rack for another month. Ordered yesterday, shipped today. Very excited to be able to actually haul my bike around soon.

Of course there are still the endless upgrades. With the 1Up rack i won't have to take the wheels off, so I could get some fancy Wolf Tooth axles... lol
