Hilux 167 Snorkel Install Tips

Hi guys,

I just installed a Hilux 167 snorkel on my 3rd gen and just wanted to share some tips for others who install it.

As always big thanks to Timmy the Toolman who's videos are a big help: YouTube

However, I do have some of my own tips to add. Pics attached.

1. The TEMPLATE IS WRONG. Mine was a lot more off than Timmy's. Always preposition your snorkel and make sure the door opens. In my case even as the video explained to line up the back-bottom end of the template with the fender this was too far back! The included elbow rubber which connected to the air box was not long enough (it barely met the snorkel ~ 0.25 overlap").

2.When drilling into the fender for mounting holes it's best to use a stepped drill bit. Make sure to start with pilot holes (or a punch). Regular drill bits tend to distort, bend, and pull the sheet metal.

3. For my snorkel a 3.5" hole was not enough to fit the end in. If this is the case use a dremel with a circular disk cutter to make the shape into an oval

4. If your elbow rubber piece is not long enough (like mine) go to Home Depot Motorsports Division i.e. the plumbing isle and get a short 2" rubber fitting. Then cut off about 1/2 inch from the plastic snorkel tip to effectively create a 1 inch gap between the snorkel and the rubber elbow. Then use the 2 inch diameter tubing to bridge the cap. On the snorkel side the tubing goes over, and on the elbow side the tubing goes into it.

5. If you have problems getting the elbow onto the airbox (you will), or any other rubber fitting issues use a heat gun to soften the material, making it easier to stretch over. In my case this wasn't enough. If it still does not fit use some motor oil to lubricate the contacting surfaces just a bit. This made it a lot easier to fit over the airbox and to wiggle it around to change the orientation.

6. I was ok with drilling into the fender, but I did not want to drill into my A pillar. I ended up using very strong outdoor application double sided tape to attach the bracket to the A pillar. This is plenty strong and is a good alternative to drilling. I figure I'll need to replace the tape every couple years or so.

7.My snorkel kit came with a rubber strip that could be attached around the main hole creating something like grommet. If yours doesn't come with it its a good idea to make something.

Good luck guys,
let me know if you have any questions.
