2wd to 4wd conversion question
Let's get this out of the way... calling
@ phattyduck
and @childofbodoom and possibly
@ silversupra
.
I got a line on a 4wd 5pd manual hub 95 Tacoma. I'm wanting to use it to do my 4wd swap. I have a 99 4runner. What are the fine details like ecu, potential wiring, etc that I may need to account for and find parts for prior to swapping?
I know the tacoma will have the core parts. 5sp trans, trans mount, trans cross member, clutch assembly, transfercase, front and rear driveshaft, front diff, manual cv's and manual hub knuckles.
Hardest Part is finding a 99 m/T ecu. I'm also pretty sure the m/T and a/T use different pins. Which means if I do locate a 4wd m/T ecu I'll still need to find a wiring harness to swap too correct?

Doing a 96 4Runner 5speed into my 99 Limited; 4wd swapped 10 years ago.
Download the FSMs and go from there.

You can repin your auto harness if you get all the plugs for the manual ecu, Toyota has the plugs available fairly cheap.
I know at least one member here has a spare harness and ecu but if you can get someone to sell you one it’s going to be pricy

I’m not one of the asked for so ignore if you like.
The Tacoma rear driveshaft is no use to you. Still have to source the correct one for the 4Runner.

This is true, you can use an auto driveshaft in a pinch, or use an auto shaft with a spacer as a more permanent solution

You could always find a 4wd automatic harness and computer out of a 99-01 and “trick the auto ECU into thinking the truck is in NEUTRAL.
Will run and idle fine as it has been done before many times.
Not sure if you can plug the 4wd auto ECU into a 2wd auto harness.
Maybe someone else could confirm that?

Hey Kanoe I did forget about you...but I'm aware of your build. I got lines on a 97 5 speed 4wd runner...So could easily pull the j shifter bothndrive shafts etc from that vehicle...just trying to minimize how many donor rigs I use... 95 Tacoma, + 97 manual drive shafts ( front and rear) , ecu from ??? Will need to be able to pass CA smog checks with this conversion...debating 1uz conversion plus 1st gen tacoma 4wd at the same time. Still won't solve my ecu issue...

I would try to sell or trade the harness and ecu from the 97 for the parts you need, that’s what I did when I had a 99 harness and ecu and needed a 97
