Reverse lights, why relay...

Setting up auxiliary reverse lights, I keep seeing a relay is required. If the trailer connection allows for reverse lights on any trailer, isn't the system already configured for trailer light. If so and adding LED aux light why a relay if not towing and connect to that circuit?

Is your trailer connector correctly wired for a trailer reverse connection? The standard plug is just a 4-flat without that wire. Also, that wire is normally used for reverse lockout on surge brakes, not lights, so it doesn't have a high current requirement and often (maybe always) won't have any extra relay in place.

Check the power requirements of the lights you are going to use - you might just be able to tap your existing reverse wires.
