Vinyl flooring to replace carpet?

I've searched but didn't find anything (at least without digging through every build that mentions vinyl) … I'm looking to replace the carpet in my 02 with something that is more easily cleaned. For anyone that's done this, any suggestions? Where should I look? Did it work well for you? Any gotchas I should know about before heading down this road?

Have you considered just putting in vinyl/rubber floor mats front, rear and hatch? That’s what I did in my 4th gen, and my carpet is still pretty clean at 16 years old. I can’t imagine ripping out all the carpet and replacing it with vinyl/rubber. It might be easier just to buy a Defender 90, haha!

WeatherTech mats are the simplest solution.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I already have weathertechs in all of my vehicles. They do a great job, but in this particular case I'm looking to make it easier to clean the interior … my 3rd gen is used extensively as a shuttle vehicle for backpacking, regardless of the weather, with two Belgian Malinois' that shed a fair amount. I'm looking to make the floorboard as low maintenance as possible and am looking for input from anyone with experience making the change to vinyl flooring.

There is someone on here who has done it. It was a couple years back but I remember because I thought it was a great idea, especially if your carpet is bagged. He bought a color matched vinyl floor that looked pretty good. Lot of work to change as pretty much the whole interior needs to be removed.

Keep searching. I don’t remember if it was a post or in the “what did you do” thread. Sorry.

Edit: it was the first thing to come up in a search. It was @Chuckles89 in a thread called “vinyl flooring and interior refresh”.

In the back of my 4th Gen I pulled out the carpet and built a wood floor...should be easier to clean. It was pretty easy to get down to the metal body, just take your time removing everything.

Stockinteriors.com sells vinyl flooring by the yard for 47 bucks a yard. 5 yards would be 15 feet of 78 inches wide should work for the 3rd Gen. You could always make your own. I imagine with a heat gun you could get it to mold to the contours after laying down fresh jute. You could also try calling them directly. They offer a vinyl floor kit for the older Reg Cab Toyota Pickups, I bet they could make a custom vinyl kit for the 3rd gen using their carpet molds. It says every order is custom made, so it wouldn't hurt to call them.

Can be done. Highly recommend you sound deaden it beforehand. I drove a Montero Sport with vinyl installed. Felt crappy and noisy compared to the carpet.

I hear ya there, I pulled all my carpets out and driving it without. I liked a FJ Cruiser I test drove that had a factory vinyl flooring. I hate carpets in cars or houses, they're nothing but a grunge magnet, and almost impossible to get 100% clean.

ACC has custom fit kits. Just go through the selection process, but select vinyl when you get to the material selection part. Easy Peasy

1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner 4DR Pass Area | Auto Custom Carpets

Planning on replacing the worn carpet in my '99 with vinyl eventually.

I've always thought the auto industry had things bass-ackwards with carpet on the floor with rubber mats.

Vinyl flooring to replace carpet?

My 94 Ram with the cummins had the heavy duty rubber floor.

Leaf blower and garden hose was all that was needed.

Vinyl rocks, my old power stroke had it. There’s definitely pros and cons to each. The carpet is quieter and warmer or the vinyl is louder but doesn’t trap odor and nastiness.

I have husky liners everywhere as the stopgap. Good liners like husky or WeatherTech solve 95% of the problems.

I’ve gutted a car interior before. It’s a hell of a lot of work. Depending on what you’re doing it may bring less money in the end too is the problem with vinyl.
