2 door 3rd gen 4runner

for a long time I've been wishing i had the 1st gen runner or even better a trekker with the removable top but then i went and got a camburg L/T kit and made a 3 link wishbone L/T rear so no i can get rid of this thing. so i am going to chop the rear roof off after the front of the cab ( like the 1st gen runners ) and mod a tacoma topper to fit and a tacoma tailgate instead of a hatch . roll cage will also be done during this process.
i need ideas or similar builds people have done (if they exist)
here are a few pics of what it should look like (photo shop).
1st pic is with a removable topper. 2nd is just 2door.
and yes that is my runner that will be made 2 door
thanks you all
matt

Very cool idea. I haven't seen it done by any one on the forums yet. Closest I've seen is a friend who made a 3rd gen pickup into a 4 door when he had a kid because he didn't want to get rid of his crawler. Looks exactly like a 2nd gen runner with the rear chopped.

Looks really cool and IMO way better looking than chopping off the cargo area. I'm really interested to see where this goes.

couple questions:
Are you going to put in a seat that slides forward to allow people to get in the back?
And, is a tacoma topper really the same size? (no criticism, generously curious.)

What about cutting the entire back off and mounting a Tacoma bed on the back end, chopping out the front of it, and building some rear seat brackets, throw some soundproofing/carpet in the bed, and get your topper on there, connect the 2 halves with Accordian boot seal and in theory it should be pretty watertight.

Pretty much making it a Walk-through cab 4Runner/Tacoma hybrid

It all works in theory, we all know execution is everything though.

thats a good idea it will all depend on if i could find a taco parting with its bed… i should be able to score a taco topper next pay check and il measure it up and see witch option is better.
thanks for the input!!

Just saw Trekker for sale pretty cheap. I hear ya on not abandoning your investment at this point though.

This sounds like an awesome idea! I can't wait to see how it turns out cause I love how on 1st gens you can take the rear hatch off. Keep us updated

You have a 2 door and you want to cut stuff off it?
Please don't.
Get a 1 gen.

If you had a gen 2 - 2 door 4runner we would need to sit down and talk even more.

The post was made almost 5 years ago, probably have moved on from this idea.

I was hoping he had completed it. I’ve got a 98 that was wrecked in the drivers side I was gonna try something with.

Newbie here, but I plan to do this very thing this year. I will weld in place the back hatch with clearance behind the first row of seats. I want to have the back window still function. The rear passenger doors will be welded shut and smoothed out to look like they were never there. The tailgate will probably be from an Isuzu Rodeo because those are junkyard bunnies, but 2nd Gen 4Runners are scarce. I will keep the functioning sunroof, but might have to limit it's travel. I will begin posting up and create a new build thread after I get my #15 posts.

Seems like the body wiring might be a bit of a headache. There's wires going everywhere in those pillars. Very cool idea and can be done, I've personally seen 2 done so far already.
