Buying after market

Would you buy an after market alternator from Amazon for $98 USD (supposed to be totally new) OR would you pay the $278 that the Toyota dealer wants?

Neither. I'd buy the denso reman from rockauto for around 125$. Or I'd buy a parts store alternator with a lifetime warranty.

Im with Underfire. OEM is the way to go. You are better off checking with Rockauto or go to SALVAGE YARD. I have replaced many remans on other folks cars that only last a few months then they call me again. REMAN run away.
If money is not really an object check out the CADDY CS upgrade or hi-output version....

Just my 2 cents

Salvage yard or OEM. But I've heard OEM parts sometimes aren't the same quality as what comes on a new vehicle.

It was from DB Electrical and I’d do it again.

Below is a new unit.
If I ever upgrade to the GM Alt I was going to purchase it from these guys.

If that's $278 for a new Denso, not bad. Remember that is $278 for a part that generally won't cause trouble for 20 years.

I just bought my 1996 T4R with 195 K miles, and I'm not yet convinced that I'll even be keeping it.
In addition to the alternator problem, I also had the dreaded "check oil idiot light" come on, one day after I changed the oil to 10W-40 (to help pass smog test) and a new oil filter (from Auto Zone, not a genuine Toyota filter). I'll be changing the oil to 5W-30 AGAIN, and a Toyota oil filter.

1st step: change brushes on existing alternator. (new brushes just arrived.)

2nd step" if that does not work, I'll put in another alternator. (money is a factor).

If that does not work, I doubt I'll be keeping it. Heaven knows how bad the oil problem is. Even putting in a new oil pump may be more trouble than it's worth. I don't want to even think beyond that point. Unfortunately even dropping the oil pan, to clean the oil pick-up screen, on a T4R is a huge hassle, which includes removing the timing chain.

A real shame because when I test drove the T4R, it ran like a scalded cat.

10W40 doesn't trigger that light. Two possibilities. Bad oil pressure sender or your engine is worn. Oil pumps generally do not fail on these. You are more likely to have an engine worn beyond acceptable tolerances before that oil pump fails.
