3rd Gen Lift Shock Question!

Ok, I have gone through all the lift and shock forums regarding the Tundra Bilstein shock upgrades. I have a 99 T4R Limited. I purchased it a couple years ago and it came with upgraded rear springs and a 1" spacer on the front. I'm guessing a 2.5"-3" lift. Not sure why but they left the stock shocks in place. My questions are:

Would it be ok for me to go the Bilstein Tundra shock route on the front or just stay with the T4R spec?

What shocks would I go with on the rear?

There are no labels on the springs and spacers so I'm guessing generic of some type. I have almost 220k on the clock and the stock shocks are getting pretty bad with one leaking.

did you try that one....
otherwise...if you want to keep the lift go with any combos in the above. If you dont want the lift, go back to stock 99 "TALLS" and KYB on all corners makes a nice combo....thats what i have now and has served me well. However. times change and im going to a 3 inch lift soon...using tundra and LC springs, billies up front , tokico in the back plus all the related "stuff"

Just 4 bolts

Basically your probably going to need a couple pry bars. But once you take off the botton bolt out, start with the top. If may come out right away, if not just lower your arms and use the pry bars to help lower the arm so you can get the bottom bolt in. Also remember to alight your top mount so it fixes on the 3 bolts they came out. Even the bottom shock mounting hole. Makes sure its straight. Just a reminder. I did this a few days ago and it literally took me 30 minutes. Just raised my perches so I can level it out.

3rd Gen Lift Shock Question!

I’m running the tundra bilsteins on the front of mine, and I like them, they have 5 perches instead of 3 like the 4runner counterpart so you have a little more fine-tuning in the height of the front lift. For the rear I wouldn’t mess with tundra bilsteins unless you have to because you would need to change out the bottom eyelet for them to fit. I’m running 4th gen 4runner/fj cruiser bilstein 5100’s in the rear which is essentially just an extended travel version of the 3rd gen equivalent. I’m only running these because I have land cruiser springs in the rear which gives it a lot of lift and so you need longer shocks to go with them, if you’re staying around 3” or less then I would run regular 3rd gen 5100’s. What springs are you planning on running front/rear? That’s kind of how you answer what shocks you want to match them with.

I just figured out it's the Rough Country 3" Lift
3in Suspension Lift Kit for 1996-2002 Toyota 4wd 4Runner [77130] | Rough Country (R)

So I'm still confused why they did just spacers on front and springs in rear only....Clearly lift comes with rear shocks... They must have not had all the tools to do it right! All four shocks are original.

I just want new shocks, not looking to start replacing everything.

I'm thinking I have to go Bilstein tundra fronts and stock rears with the 2.5"?
I'm really only looking to make the ride better.

okay yeah i would stick with the regular 5100's in the rear then, or another shock of your choice with similar size.

Everything I've read seems to steer me towards the Bilsteins. Anything else I should look at?

Also the Tundra fronts are for 2002-2007 Tundra correct?

I think 2005 was the last year tundra that it would work with so as long as it’s that year you should be good.
