My early wheeling days were done with an 88 4Runner, 22RE 5-speed (still have it). The modern overlander would never be able to tolerate ~20s 0-60 times. Found an old quote on YotaTech:
"what ever a semi truck is add about 1 sec and that is my 0-60"
Yes the narrow frame of the early 4Runner is an asset that is easily overlooked but super valuable once you're in the woods.
