I had the same symptoms one time. Put in new brushes and then put another 200,000 km on the corolla. The tap to fix is an indication it’s brushes making intermittent contact as they are now too short in length.

Yeah that’s what I’m going with. They show up tomorrow. Can’t wait.

Not just that, but disconnect the cables and bend them around. Wiggle/bend the ends a bit. They should take some abuse without making crackling noises.

I had a bad time with my negative cable until I cut 12" off from it and soldered on a new section. 12" was just corroded inside but you couldn't see it just by looking at it. I replaced it with the old-school lead terminal. Far superior than what Toyota used. Their terminals will crack over time and it leads to corrosion which starts moving internally up the cable.

Got the brush set...but have 260k on her and the alt still runs ok. Debating whether to do it.

At 260K, you don't have much life left. Mine died at 225K. It's an easy repair, just pop out the alt and swap the brushes. Very little work needed to remove it all.

The 80a three year old reman from CarQuest stopped charging. Wacking it with a hammer fixed it so I ordered brushes from the dealer and replaced them. The brush assembly I pulled had brushes that were barely 1/8” long. I’m sure they were either the cheep 6 dollar brushes, or the Alt had a different failure like a voltage regulator.

Reman stuff is not a full rebuild. They only replace what’s broken imo.

Actually the other way around?

Rebuilt Engines vs. Remanufactured Engines, Used & Crate

But yeah, they use the terms to confuse us I think. They just replace what is broken is all.

But did it fix your charging issue? Inquiring minds want to know. I also want to know if you found the video helpful.

Video was helpful for the placement. Drove it 100 miles to make sure and she’s back to normal now. I wanted to give it a full test before reporting back.

And still charge you and insane price + a core (if you dont have an old one)!!
For me, OEM period. Even if it is at the wrecking yard, Denso has never let me down.

Say what you want, I’ve had plenty of rebuilds that had problems. Which is why I do shit by myself or I take my problem to someone I trust. Try replacing the axle seals on a Dodge Ram front axle. Or ball joints. It’s not fun.

I will second the OEM quality. Original Denso went out around ~190k miles. Toyota dealership couldn't get a new alternator until next day, which was too long.
Local auto shop could put in a Duralast same day. It lasted about 10 months before the batt light kept coming on and ignition was misfiring.
Took it in, they swapped it out with another Duralast. That one lasted almost a year and started having problems. Local shop replaced it again under warranty.
I bought an OEM alt from a Toyota dealership that does internet sales as a backup in case the 3rd Duralast failed.
After about 15 months it failed too. Even though it had a lifetime warranty, the local shop refuses to replace it again. I had them put in my ordered OEM and order a replacement Duralast which I took, uninstalled as a spare.

Given how important it is to the operation of the vehicle, keeping track of when they are relatively inexpensive on Camelback, Toyota of Dallas, or other stores that do internet sales of OEM parts and picking one up is worth considering.

The "kaboom" of late detonation of misfires is not a pleasant experience.
