Transmission WAS stuck in neutral

i had a problem yesterday and would like any info you guys can give me. My family was on vacation in the outer banks. We were driving down the road around 55 mph. A truck cut me off at a yellow light then slammed on his brakes. I hit my brakes and a tent in the back of the cargo area flew forward hit me then hit my shifter. The truck didnt act strange or make any sound. Then when i went to take off the truck was just stuck in neutral. i could shift thru all the gears but no matter what the transmission wouldnt get out of neutral. I pushed it into a parking lot. Checked the fluid and it was red, didnt smell burnt. I got my wife to shift thru all the gears while i got under the truck. The linkage moved just fine but still it would NOT get out of neutral. Another strange thing is i would shift it to park but i couldnt get teh key out. Guess the key lock thought the truck wasnt in park so the key wouldnt release. After calling a tow and some friends to pick us up 30-45 mins later i went to see if i could get the key out and it released. It also seemed to shift thru all the gears. The tranny seemed fine. I took a chance and drove it home. It didnt give me a single problem. like nothing ever happened. One thing though when i got home and stopped even in park the ignition wouldnt let me remove the key. I found a thread on here on how if the shifter has any side to side play it might not be engaging the ignition switch slot to release the key. I took the shifter apart and sure enough that was why. I tightened everything up cleaned out 23 years of grease grit and dirt then put it back together. Key came out like nothing ever happened. Today its ran just fine. my question is what the hell do you think happened? Why was my truck stuck in neutral then just seemed to fix itself. Im relieved but worried if something is broken or about to be. Thanks for your help guys ive gotten more help and knowledge from this site than any other.

possibly the solenoid valve was forced shut mechanically by the impact but the electrical connection was still showing the ecm that the SolenoId was still in neutral and even though the shifter linkage was moving but the ecm was reading neutral and would not let the transmission get into drive. No tranny expert just a theory so take it with a grain of salt.

Did you shut down the rig completely after going through all the gears?

The Torque converter couldn't have to be stuck or in lock position.

Did the shifter actually get bumped into neutral during the high speed stop? As this does sound the the solenoids got stuck in the neutral position. As this would explain neutral while manually shifting through the gears. Extremely odd indeed.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah i shut her down completely after going through all the gears. The shifter did get bumped into neutral during the stop. I drove it yesterday and today the truck is still just fine. Im due for a fluid change so im going to do that this coming weekend.
