Starter Replacement

Hi all,

It looks like the starter in my T4R needs to be replaced...however when looking at the parts list I see two different units shown. One is 28100-62030-84 marked as 1.8kw and the other is 28100-62050-84 with no power rating shown and $14 more.

Does it matter, or is there a way to tell what is in my truck now? It is a late (May 1997) SR5 V6 with A/C.

I think the contacts are worn...sometimes when cranking it will just stop, and then when I turn the key again it fires right up. Battery is good. I did see the posts about just changing the copper parts but I think I'd rather replace the whole unit seeing as how other parts could be worn (brushes, springs, bearings). It is the original starter.

It looks like it might be a bit of a hassle to replace it so I may just have a shop do it...

Thanks!

Ted

I would find a local shop in your area that specializes in rebuilding starters and alternators. Most local shops that do this for a living uses OEM parts to complete your build not that cheap Chinese made crap in autozone or Napa and the prices are much better once you give the your core. For years I've used my local shop to rebuild my vehicles and they always last

You can always get a rebuilt oem from eBay or amazon. Got my oem one from amazon for about $60. After 7 years still going strong. Hopefully it will last the lifetime of the truck which is forever

Keep your OEM Denso starter and just rebuild the starter solenoid. 9 times out of 10 it just needs a set of new contacts and plunger. You don't need to buy the expensive rebuild kit from Toyota. There's much more affordable options for a contacts and plunger kit. We provide a link to an affordable set sold on Amazon in the video description.

It's a little bit of a hassle to replace but the money you save doing it yourself is well worth it.

My starter was getting clicky, so I bought a set of dorman contacts, and used @mtbtim 's video as a guide for what to do. Out and in, in two hours, including time to visit with family. Did this at about 190k, still good at about 210k. Would recommend.

I started looking into replacing contacts but decided that a rebuild was out of the question for me. The gear that contacts the flywheel was chewed up, DOH!

Replaced with a reman from Autozone. Yeah yeah I'll get a lot of poopoo from the internet about that. BUT, it's got a lifetime warranty. Happy with that.

Tim's video's were clutch as usual.

Don't forget to take out your tranny fill tube before attempting to wiggle it out - I didn't know it could come apart and spent maybe an hour desperately trying to fit it through, took out the top half of the tube and had the starter out in maybe 10 minutes. Chances are it's covered in years of god knows what and near impossible to get a firm grip, so be patient and give yourself all the space you can!
I avoided rebuilding for the same reasons - knowing my luck, something else would absolutely crap out asap. If you shoot for a new unit, I personally got this one from DB Electric back in July and it's worked great. There's a review from one guy saying it was different than what came out of his vehicle (specifically the gear/splines), but I certainly had an OEM piece and they were identical as far as I can tell. You'll notice your truck turn over much faster, regardless! Maybe 2/3 as fast, I'd say

DB Electric is a great company. On my Saturn Fourm it’s where a lot get replacement Alternators from. If I ever do the 144 Alt upgrade I’m buying it from them. The Alt I purchased for my Saturn is still going strong.

I've replaced 3 starters in my 2005 4runner. Easy job for a mechanic that knows - just two bolts. Starters seem to last 4 years for me and crap out. Same with the OEM, and after the rebuilt it lasted 1 year and got thrown away.

Amazon carries these starters new for under $100. Got a lifetime warranty on mine.

Amazon.com: DB Electrical SND0491 New Starter For Toyota Tacoma & Tundra 4.0L 4.0 05 06 07 08 09 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 & 4Runner 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 FJ Cruiser 07 08 09: Automotive

Remember when installing to disconnect the battery.

You have a 4th gen 4Runner so we can't use that. This is the 3rd gen 4Runner section by the way
