F150 Fuel Tank + Toyota Sending Unit Kit
Many of us are switching out our stock fuel tank for an F150 tank located in the factory spare tire area (you can read about all of that here). There are some major advantages in doing this swap: increased ground clearance, better weight distribution, and freeing up space in-front of the axle to change the rear suspension link geometry. Though one of the major disadvantages has been the in-ability to integrate the sending unit to allow the factory fuel gauge to work. Some people have done it (
@ midcoma
and
@ 2TH4IST
are the only ones I know of), but it has required extensive work which includes major cutting of the tank and sheet metal welding.
In an effort to find a better solution, I have developed this kit. This kits integrates the OEM Toyota sending unit onto the F150 fuel pump assembly in order to retain the factory fuel gauge. I have done my best to make this kit as easy of a swap as possible using only basic tools.
..................................................
Kit Price: $100 shipped
Kit Contents:
1 x Toyota Sending Unit Conversion Bracket
4 x In-tank Butt Connectors (only 3 are needed, 1 extra has been provided)
8 x Heat Shrink Butt Connectors (only 7 are needed, 1 extra has been provided)
1 x Packet of Silicone Grease
1 x Bulkhead Connector
1 x One-Way Retainer Clip
1 x In-tank Grounding Wire
1 x In-tank Wiring Harness (with pre-stripped ends)
1 x Outside-tank Wiring Harness (with pre-stripped ends)
Parts you should already have:
1 x 1990-1997 F150 Rear Fuel Tank Assembly (Spectra F1G1FA or equivalent)
1 x Toyota Sending Unit P/N 83320-35590 or P/N 83320-35620
>> Installation Instructions <<
>> Wiring Diagram <<
..................................................
Notes:
- This kit is made for 1999-2002 4Runners, this kit will NOT work on 1996-1998 4Runners. Starting in 1999, Toyota switched to a digital odometer and the way the fuel sending unit works is by a digital reference from the dash, and the sending unit geometry and electronics completely changed. The bracket and wiring harnesses in this kit have been designed to only work with these 1999-2002 Toyota sending units. If you have a 1996-1998 4Runner and want your factory fuel gauge to work after swapping fuel tanks, I believe you can get your gauge to work (minus the low fuel light) by using a fuel calibration device (see Classic Instruments Fuel Link, MeterMatch Fuel Gauge Interface Module, or similar device).
- The bracket only works with the Toyota Sending Unit P/N 83320-35590 (1999-2001 model years) or P/N 83320-35620 (2002 model year). Sometime in late 2000, Toyota had a service bulletin TSB EL010–00, which replaced the (sometimes defective) sending unit P/N 83320-35530 with P/N 83320-35590. The geometry changed between these two versions, the bracket in this kit is designed to fit the later version. So if you have a model year 2002, your OEM unit should work. If you have a 1999-2001 model year and had your vehicle serviced from TSB EL010–00, then your sending unit will work. Some 2001 model years will have the old unit and some will have the new unit, it depends on the production date. If you have a 1999-2000 model year and have not had your vehicle serviced from TSB EL010–00, you need to purchase the new sending unit (P/N 83320-35590).

I do not have my F150 fuel tank installed, I am not at that point yet, but I want to get this kit out as soon as possible for those that need it. I have verified that everything functions the way it should, but in a scientific manner. I want to verify that everything functions exactly the way it should in the real world, so I am looking for someone that can install this in their vehicle and in a relatively quick timeframe (by or before next weekend, September 19th/20th), and report back to me their findings. I will send them a full kit at no cost and my preliminary installation instructions. I will give first priority to the following individuals since they have reached out to me expressing interest in a kit.
@ eimkeith
@ rickashay
@ Rockdawg84
@ xweslingx
@ 3rdgensr5
@ Jsimp11
Edit:
@ Jsimp11
will be getting the first kit and will verify the functions and installation instructions.
In the meantime, I will now be taking pre-orders with the hope that orders will be ready to ship out once I get validation that everything works. Please respond to this thread if you are interested and I will DM you, or send a DM to me.
Thank you!
..................................................
For confirmed pre-orders, so far I have:
@ eimkeith
@ rexassian
@ sleepydad
@ infamousRNR
(2 kits)
@ rickashay
@ wrench.n.wheel
@ 3rdgensr5

Would you like just the wiring (everything minus the bracket)?...because the bracket won't work.

Ah man, I truly wish I had this when I did my tank swap.
@ Team_Jake
that is awesome work. It was a royal pita getting the stock stuff to work in the tank, I think this will speed up that process substantially for other people that are interested in doing this swap.
Trust me it's worth it! Even if I never change my link locations from stock it frees up a boat ton of room for things like a air tank and compressor ect. But I digress. Just for refrence this is what I had to do to get the stock pump to fit in the tank, and then the sender.
Edit to add more pics.

Yeah, basically when I realized how much work it would take to cut, weld, fab everything into the F150 tank, I knew there had to be a better way. I hope to get my tank swapped soon.

@ Team_Jake
Following.. How long do you see yourself providing this kit? The fuel tank swap is on the list, but it's not high priority right now. I just don't want to miss out.

I have enough parts to make 25 kits total. I don't expect this to be a huge seller, my guess is it'll take a year or two to sell all 25. If later down the road inventory is starting to get low I'll let you know.

I asked Chuck, said cat. He said meow. Gave me the side eye and walked away. (Cats not for sale lol).

Installation instructions and a wiring diagram have been posted in the first post. More pictures/illustrations will be added in the future.
