How are used prices in your area?

I know in general, used truck prices are nuts right now. I haven't kept up with 3rd gen pricing in my area, but some things are changing in my house and I'm starting to wonder what my 3rd gen is worth.

So how are 3rd gen values going where you are?

Wayyy overpriced around here (Snoho county WA). Havent checked since covid hit but before the average was like $10k for ones with 150k on the dash. I imagine it's because they're popular in my area and it's some "I know what I got" shit
My buddy is currently in the market and I know hes been really struggling to find one at all, let alone decently priced. Doesnt help that they sell like hot cakes around here, despite the price

I just got my '97 with 220K for $5500 and the guy I was buying it from was getting calls from guys offering more than he was asking, sight unseen, while I was looking at it. There's one in Bend on Craigslist with 118K on it and he wants $12500. These are manual transmission prices. For autos you can probably take a grand or so off the price. Again, this is in the PNW. But for anything in a 5-speed with less than 200K the going rate seems to start around $8000.

NC here.

There is no middle ground here it seems! You have:

- 250-300K miles and battered up -- $2500ish minimum

- Sub 200k miles and "decent"-- $6500-8,000ish

___

Side note, this thread is depressing. I have way too much tied up in a 20 year old, 240k mile toyota.

That's kind of what I'm starting to think.

I love my 4Runner. Growing up, I always wanted a 3rd gen. So when I was able to, I bought one and have been steadily fixing it up. I let my son drive it when he got his license, but he just upgraded to a newer Tacoma. So now the 4Runner sits unused. My daughter gets her license next year so the plan was for her to drive the 4Runner. After that? It was going to be a dedicated hunting rig.

But with the values being what they are right now... I wonder if it's worth keeping at this point or changing directions. I don't usually become attached to vehicles, but this decision is surprisingly difficult.

Yeah I hear ya on that. Here in the BC interior I have seen some crazy prices for rusted out junk. But once in a while you could get a steal of a deal, you just have to check online daily.

One of my friends recently paid $6k for a manual with 300k miles on it. On the flip side... I picked up a second one last year(240k miles and auto trans) in Carson City for $1400. I guess it's just a matter of how motivated the seller is and how much spare cash the buyer has.

In western Washington, prices are pretty crazy. I find it hilarious when someone posts one for sale in the 4Runners of Washington group or someplace else and gets tons of comments about how they bought one for $700 or their friend is selling one with low miles for $2200 or whatever stupid number they say, then two days later that "way overpriced" runner is sold.

I constantly consider selling my 3rd gen because I could probably get north of $10k for it, but man I remember buying it back in 2015 when prices are half of what they are now.

I'll be interested to see how long prices hold. They still seem to be held pretty tight to mileage and much better than average condition, but I've seen some pretty beat and high mileage 4runners sell for a surprisingly high number.

I think the size of them goes a long way in the PNW. Land Cruisers can be too wide for some of our trails. I feel like my 5th gen is massive compared to the 3rd gen. The 3rd gen feels like it's right size for the PNW.

With the right features and the right buyer, any price is possible.

I part out 4Runners from time to time. I've purchased running, repairable 4Runners (I don't repair them though) for as low as $600 for a 2WD model here in Sacramento. I'll also see ones around 150K miles, 4WD, good paint, meticulous records of every service done, character references, medical records, volunteer hours completed, whatever and an asking price of near $10K. They sell at or near that price because there's buyers out there that will only buy a used vehicle off a private seller if they do have every service record available since the beginning of time. So for whatever reason that will forever baffle me, it's worth it to that person to pay several thousand more just for that.

As a general rule of thumb though, a decent condition 4WD 4Runner with 200K miles in Sacramento is worth around $6K. More if less miles and more if it's been lifted with aggressive looking tires.

Really, it's all so depressing. Guns and cars are very victim to artificial inflation, and the second it starts, you can't stop it and they never recover. Just ask anybody into AKs, we see it every few months it seems, and get it far worse than practically everyone else - with the exception of HK guys.

Seems like you guys are hoarding the manuals. When I was shopping (and obviously looking for a stick) the ONLY ones that came up over the course of months were ALL in Oregon. A whopping 3 or 4, that is. Nobody wants to give them up (rightfully so!)
And of course within a week of buying my '00, a manual+elocked '99 Highlander popped up in Beaverton, within budget, and stayed available for WEEKS

Prices are all over the place here in NorCal
Anywhere from $4500-15k
I’ve seen some for cheaper but they are usually people who don’t know how popular they are and they sell within hours of the post.
I bought a totaled out one for $1900 with a sc. He told me “why are these so popular? It’s just a 20year old Toyota. I got guys wanting to give me 5k for it, but I think there just full of it”
I just said idk and thanks How are used prices in your area?.
