What a day...

So my Kid (who now has my rig) blew the rear end in it last night.

So thinking if he removed the rear driveshaft he would see if he could drive it home in 4WD with just the front end engaged. Obviously didn't work as the rear would lock up so he called for a tow.

He called me for a ride back and while the truck was being towed (rear end on a dolly with the front wheels on the road travellin backwards and in the dark) we noticed that it looked like there was some light smoke or something coming out of the snorkle. We flashed our lights at the tow truck driver and pulled him over to take a look but didn't notice anything wrong. I stuck my head in the cab and I seen that the 4Runner was still in 4-HI so i put it in neutral and carried on to the shop. This tow took about 10 minutes. I suspect that the engine was spinning backwards at about 30 MPH for around 5 minutes.

So the next issue, besides the busted rear end, is the truck wouldn't stay running. We noticed that there were 3 vacuum hoses that popped off. 1 to the TB, 1 to the EVAC box thing, and I can't remember where the other one went. There was oil on top of the EVAC box too where the hose had come off. We pulled the TB out and cleaned it as well as the IAC. and now it idles fine. There was a lot of dry soot like residue in the IAC an TB.

Anyway, the problem now is that the throttle is really stiff but only when the truck is running. When it's off it feels fine. Opens and closes fine. When it's running and he blips the throttle, it stays at about 3000 RPM. I can force it closed by hand but it won't close by itself.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening or what to check next? Thanks!

Looks like you should look for a roll over donor with the engine spinning backwards my guess is that the oil pump would be pulling the little oil that is in the bearing area away pushing it back to the pan. You can pull the plugs crank the engine to get out any oil pull the air cleaner and wipe out any oil you can get to try and start it let us know how it goes.

She started right up fine and no smoke or anything out of the exhaust, it just had the idling issue. Purrs like a kitten otherwise.

The problem now is that the throttle is really stiff but only when the truck is running. The throttle cable is nice and free as well, it's just when we start it up that the throttle plate seems stiff. I'll look for more vacuum hose issues today.

Is the cruise control on or stuck causing the 1998 throttle cable to bind when the rig is on?

I either pull the cable off the back of the cruise control box or pull its fuse and see if that is causing this throttle issue.

did you pop open the throttle body and look in, to see if there's any blockage? does the door move freely? i'd also look at the cable to be sure it isn't harmed in some way. if non-running tests all come up neg, i'd fall back on some things like brillo's suggestions... fouled or otherwise nonfunctional sensors and the like. are you getting a CEL code at all?

Yeah that's me lol... Still getting "thanks" from a lot of people about that fix. But like I mentioned, there is no restriction with the TB when the engine is off. I'm leaning towards a possible vacuum issue. Not sure about the TPS yet. Will test it tomorrow.

Pulled the TB and cleaned it and the IAC. No codes either.

If you have to tow 4wd with the axle on the ground. Might be bust to pull the driveshafts. Especially the later years and early years limited. As it seems tow companies do know enough to put the transfers in Neutral.. :/
