Cabin Air Filter

I’m just curious did any of the 3rd gen 4runners come with a cabin filter? Like the 01-02 models? I’m driving to Wisconsin from Portland tomorrow and I really wish I had one or if there was a way to rig one up. This smoke out west is giving me a headache when driving. I’ve had it on recirculating air and it hasn’t helped much.

Unfortunately not. Cabin air filters started with 4th gens. There have been a handful of ambitious folks who have stuffed filter material up above the blend doors with some success. Some with Tacos documented their attempts here.

Good luck and stay safe out there.

That write for the taco doesn’t seem to hard. The blower motor setup looks similar to the 4runner. I guess it comes down to the right size HEPA filter.

Search on here, I've seen a detailed write-up of a gent installing a filter onto our systems, it would be nice to have for us off-roaders especially. My vehicles with cabin filters get amazingly dirty in a couple years and they only drive on paved roads....

Another source of interior dust/dirt is the rear exhaust vent on the 4Runner... the flap breaks off and just allows crap in - from right behind the rear driver's side tire!

That won't help with the smoke though. I live a few miles from the fire closest to Los Angeles and it has been pretty bad. The only 'safe' place from the smoke is in the house where we have a good central AC filter.

I'll have to check that out.

Yesterday was terrible in Portland for air quality and dense smoke. I was wearing my N95 mask at times when driving. I can actually see the sun today.

Smile

I stuff one through the blower motor. I have had it for 2 months. There's no strong smell or dust anymore
