That cover was only on some of the 4Runners. I don't know the details, but my '99 never had it (though it was a 2WD) and my '97 parts truck didn't look like it ever had it.

As for the OEM transfer case skid... the little steel cover isn't much.

Wagoneer, the forefather of Lux SUV's about the only reason.
3rd Gen's, street/offroad cred n looks = classic = $$$.

I had never seen one of those covers until I got the '98 Limited a couple years ago. Amazed that it survived. I removed it doing some PM a couple weeks ago and I don't see it going back on.
