Do you plan to restore your 4Runner?

Our 4Runners are getting up in years. On October 7th mine will be 23 years old I think. I’ve paid quite a bit to have some repairs and precautious maintenance this past year. I want to keep it running for as long as possible. But, eventually all things completely breakdown. Not sure if I’ll have it restored or sell it for a newer used 4Runner. What will do with yours when the time comes.

I will just fix stuff that breaks along the way. How many miles does your 4Runner have?

Not a lot for a 23 year old vehicle. Only 178k and some change. The thing is 95% of the miles is from inner city driving. Start and stop driving in gridlock traffic and just quick tripS around the corner to the grocery store.

Yeah like Showtime, I fix/recondition stuff along the way. Next are 99 tall springs/shocks/struts but this one is at nearly 327K, virtually trouble free, ahhhh.

In the old definition of restoration, it meant to put things back as it left the factory. including colors etc. So I wont be doing a restoration anytime soon. Just fix and mod as I go.

Valid point. I run mine mostly stock. Mine restorations would be frame and body panel restores but I can see even that being a gray area these days.

Toyota's don't go by years or miles. The rust and accidents are the only enemies for a toyota. Toyota trucks are used world wide, so securing parts even after 35 years will not be a problem. I now this with the 1990 Hilux we own.

Just make sure to install OEM parts: Back in 2012, a tech at Firestone told me one of the inner TRE is out, and seek my approval. I said next time. Guess what, that ITRE is still solid after 8 years! Had I replace it with a non-oem part, I would have replaced it 2 times by now.

It is a wise idea to purchase OEm lower Ball joints if you plan to keep it for some time.

I recently replaced all control arms in my 2000 Land Cruiser with OEM parts. The once came out are still good even at 240K miles.

I guess many Toy's owned by us are the lucky ones!!!

My old '97 Limited 2WD will hit 350k by the end of the year and I have been considering taking it off daily duty and replacing it with a newer Toyota. I have long joked about driving it until it comes apart like the Bluesmobile at the end of "The Blues Brothers.

My son has been on me to redo it at that time with maybe a V8 swap(not an LS, I like to stay in the Yota family, lol). I have driven it daily for quite some time and i just hate to let it go. So I guess some form of redo is in store. To what degree, I am still mulling it over.

Wow that’s a lot of miles! Do you daily it? If so has it been mostly trouble free?

Amazing how many miles you got to! Has it been mostly trouble free miles? Just wondering because I started to daily drive my 2000 4Runner and got rid of my other vehicle.

For the most part, it has been a trouble free ride. Routine maintenance and replacing parts as needed, OEM when possible, especially suspension pieces. A fresh Koyo radiator for insurance and routine timing belt/water pump changes have helped a lot. Did blow a head gasket at 214k or thereabouts. Non Toyota people are often freaked out about the high mileage, but I find Toyota owners mainly nod and go yeah.

I am interested to see how far it can go. It is rust free as far as I can tell. I am diligent about winter cleanups, so that has helped. i do think a supercharger may be in the future if the engine takes a dive. Time will tell.

Mine is over 25 years old and has 331k miles and after some recent maintenance stuff (231 mm Tundra brake upgrade job, new shocks and bearing replacement) it is ready for another 100k. I like the truck stock and will get my torn rear leather seat and sunroof fixed and it will be new again. It will be used as a daily driver and dog car.
