Gen 3 back door pistons part numbers for different markets
Hi guys
If anyone cares, I've found a few differences in part numbers for the rear gas pistons that help raise the back door of Gen 3 4Runners.
The 4Runners in the US market are supplied with 2 model pistons- 68907/8-35010 and 35020. The 68907 and 68908 are for right and left pistons. What's the actual difference between them, I don't know.
The Japanese market Hilux Surfs (right hand drive 4runners) are supplied with two models also - the 68907/8-35020 and 35040. The descriptions for those two (translated from Japanese) are: 35020 are for Gen 3s with spare tire carriers mounted to the frame (like in the US), and the 35040 are for Gen 3s with the spare tire carrier mounted to the back door.
Since I upgraded my back door with one from a Surf because of the tire carrier, and used the same old pistons, I realized that the Surf back door is quite heavier than the 4Runners original back door, due to the spoiler with a reverse mirror at the top (although later I went with the wide LED stop light spoiler instead, see attached pics), a lock plate for the carrier, and a bigger handle garnish and a separate license plate light bezel.
The original pistons can't hold the door up during warm days, talk about cold ones!
I plan on ordering the 35040 pistons with hopes that they will perform way better in the upcoming winter.
If you want new pistons for your US 4Runners, I recommend the 35040s as they will probably hold better and longer than any of the other part numbers when new.
My 4runner is the white one in the pics, with the OEM wide LED stop lamp spoiler. The other is for reference to see the size and imagine the added weight of the reverse mirror spoiler.
Anyway here are some pics of the last trip we did in the Middle Mountains here on the Balkans...
