I don't think this could be the problem, but is your shifter knob by any chance loose?

All I currently have is a1998 limited engine harness. Etc. So that's not compatible with the 1999.

I’m close to throwing in the towel on this 3rd gen, but I sure would love to keep my dream truck alive. Is there any issue with driving the truck by disconnecting the neutral safety switch harness behind the glove box after I start the truck? I did this yesterday to move the truck about 10 miles to its final resting place and it seems to drives fine. I can live without gear indicator lights. The R light still comes on in the dash with the connector behind the glove box disconnected. I think there is a short somewhere in the harness behind the dash maybe where the wiring for the R light joins the bundle to the cluster.

By any chance that the park neutral safety switch is damaged or shorted some way? As something had to damage and burn those wires like that. That looks more like dead short damage to melt the insulation like that. I am curious what was the initial cause of this was.

I did swap out the neutral safety switch with a new unit, but that was before I re-insulated the wires. I can swap it out again to test now that the wires are re-insulated and report back. Is there a continuity test for the NSS that I could do off the truck?

If you can replace the harness, it will run. Have you tried Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
