What’s the best way to go here? The replacement parts are pricier than I anticipated.

i am also interested as the drivers one on my 2000 has some rust issues. Passenger one seems intact.

Well you have 3 options:

1] find south rust free axles replace bearings etc and use them

2] take your axles out have everything pressed off replace what's bad and replace the plates

3] convert to rear disk kit that a member made in the forum

Tim has step by videos on the procedure of changing axles and ot back plates. ;)

Thanks, i’ll look those videos up. I wasn’t looking for a project but one seems to have found me. A full rebuild is in the works either way I go.

Those plates are fairly thin. They rot through on a pile of rigs. It's one if the reasons they built that disc conversion kit for the 3rd gens. To convert you cut that plate basically all off..

When I replaced the rear axle seals & bearings on my 02 with 180K miles I decided to replace both brake backing plates as they were badly rusted through.
Ordered them online from Conicelli Toyota @ $95 a piece.
It’s a good time to also dismantle and clean up the bellcranks.
Not cheap but oh so nice to have something on my rig that is solid and rust free.....for now.

One of mine has a small hole in it. I plan on doing the disc brake conversion in the springtime.

If the backing plates are rusted significantly, chances are the axle housing is as well. If your going all out, you may consider finding a rust free rear end housing from a salvage yard, EBay, etc, including axles/backing plates. Might not be much more than just new backing plates from Toyota

I've seen 2 extremely clean and rust free 4runners this past year in the rust belt at my local junkyard. Took the axles off, told the guy I only wanted the backing plates and ended paying $20 for rust free backing plates. That's one way to do it.

Brian, if I were to build up another Axle, would any 3rd gen housing work with the E locker?

Non and e locker axle housings are different. As well as 2 different ratios or factory e lockers I believe. Brian or another user can verify this and correct if necessary.

Yes, you need an elocker housing, unless you want to spend a lot of time modifying a standard housing to work. When my original housing started leaking, I bought a rust free elocker housing, drum to drum, but no third member, on this site for $225. Did a elocker conversion and got rid of a lot of rust.

You can actually get replacement back axle housing to replace the rusted pan the 3rd member fill plug is on. However, mostly if they are that rusty. Its best to replace the entire housing. I just wanted to mention it as users my have a pin hole only in the pan and can replace it if need be. :-)

I got lucky and located another rear locker axle (and extras) for 1000$ This one's rust free.
