This is where my mind initially went. Although a little bit different of a powerplant, my Honda Ruckus did the same exact thing (temp rise and bubbles every 2-4 seconds in the coolant) when I rebuilt it because I wasn't torqueing the head bolts properly due to a wrench that needed to be calibrated. Got a new wrench, redid the gasket for the 4th time, and every was solved.

New radiator, new fan clutch, new thermostat, external trans cooler. It is a MUST on these vehicles. ESPECIALLY if you want to go crawling in the desert. Hell, even after that, I still see my temps getting close to dangerous wheeling in Colorado in the middle of winter.

To backup what 19963.4lsr5 said. On first cold start for 30 sec or so mine is locked up moving air, this easiest time to hear the difference. Say engine is warmed to normal op temp, open hood turn engine off fan should stop rather quick, guesstimate 5-10 sec.

Yeah I overheated climbing a grade in the snow once. I was completely baffled as to what was going on until I looked at the gauge since I figured the cold air would be enough to cool it off. Not when going 10 MPH thouhg!

When its just about too late, 300F.
There s/b plenty of air being pulled even with a/c on, idling for hours or slow speed wheeling. There is something wrong, most likely a combination of aging fan clutch and failing radiator cap. Replace both with toyota stuff and it'll last a long time. Luck.

I just did the cap and will do the clutch fan in a month or so being I'm not doing any slow wheelie till next spring. I've been in stop and go traffic at 100 degree temps and my gauge would never go above half. I was seriously crawling at 5 to 10mph for a long time in 4low when it started to get warm.
Does your profile pic have anything to do with Willie Nelson, I can't tell if its him or not? I was listening to "I can get off on you" by Willie and Waylon while I was reading your comment.

If a vehicle is starting to get warm while crawling. I prefer to turn on the heater to max and raise the hood. This allows the vehicle to cool itself and prevent hotspots in the engine. When wheelin I also carry an infrared thermometer to verify Temps.
If your ATF reached 250 deg or higher change it. Even if recently changed.
