Don't know if you went ahead with your purchase, but having worked on those jeeps, and the 4runner a lot, I'd tell you that the thing you shall fear the most, is rust.

Vehicles in these years were prone to rust, and why you see so many rusted out 4runners, it's because they last so long.

Beside the pink milkshake thing that would pretty much guarantee you of a transmission swap, which you don't have to fear with a manual, and lack of maintenance on the engine, everything else is pretty much doable DYI on the vehicle, and parts are cheap and readily available.

I'd say that over 5 years, most of my problems beside a transmission swap and A/C were all related to rusting component or problem during work due to rust.

Also have to do work on the body pretty much every spring, so be prepared for that if you live in the rust belt and want to keep that beautiful look.

It was sold before he even said he'd be back in town, so shucks...

I can't stand doing rust reform either.....Last time I had a rusty YJ I eventually just patched it, rust inhibited it, primed it, and monstalined the whole shabang. I added some factory decals and clear coated it....It ended up looking great and holding up against the weather extremely well. Blasted and Por-15ed the frame as best I could without doing a complete frame off too. Took me a few weeks to do, but if i found a 4runner with a good drivetrain and minimal frame rust, I'd have no problem repeating the process.

Thanks for all the help fellas. I'm looking at another one soon with way more miles, but the owner says he has paper work on a trans swap and a timing service.

Truck has - 230
Trans has - 160
Timing was done- 30k ago (so at 200 on the engine 130 on the trans)

body looks excellent, didn't have pics of the frame, but the interior looks pretty beat. He wants 3500 for it

Assuming the paperwork checks out, and the truck sounds good. What do you all think? I can post some pics if it helps

Okay so i passed on the last one because the guy was kinda flaky.

I went to look at a new one today:

2000 Limited
151,000
Ran and drove well
The inside was immaculate
the frame looked good EXEPT when I dropped the spare tire I found the frame issues in the posts. It must have been because the salt was never washed off where the spare sat.

I was all set to buy this one until i found this frame damage. Has anyone dealt with this repair before? I'm always a bit wonky about welding anywhere near the gas tank, and I really don't know if I'd want to drop it especially now that it's like 20 degrees.

These pieces of the frame are like directly under the cargo area

if the rest of the frame is solid and you can get it for like $1000 or less I'd buy it, that is if you are comfortable with frame welding. I repaired that exact same section on mine, though the rust wasn't quite as bad. Since I wanted to mount a hitch and keep the same rear frame shape I decided not to plate it and just spliced in a section of frame that I cut off a junked vehicle that wasn't rusty. I only did one side though as the rest of the frame is solid.

I’d pass on that one. Personally, I’d deal with no engine before I attempted to fix that one back up.

Unless it’s dirt cheap and you want a project.
