Front End "Clap"?
So, I just started to notice a quick and loud clap when there's a decent amount of flex (going around sharp corners, hitting road dips at low speed, etc.) on the front end. I've been digging around the forums, but didn't see anything that addresses the items that I haven't checked/replaced yet. I have removed the sway bar up front, which gives the Bilstein 6112's much more movement. I've seen some mention of a top-out noise, but nothing in particular to a legit "clap".
Here's what I've already checked:
- LBJ's (new within the last 35k)
- Outer tie rods (brand new Moog as of the other week as part of this troubleshooting)
- Inner tie rods (new within the last 25k)
- Steering rack bushings (new within the last 35k)
- Steering rack (I shook it around when replacing the outer tie rods and it seemed firm)
- TBU (two of the four pad retaining clips are broken, which I am trying to find a spring upgrade option for - this is something I think may be the culprit, despite brakes being applied in most cases where I hear the clap and not hearing anything similar with regular brake application)
- Axles (they don't feel like there's any excessive play, but I'm not sure what else I should be looking for. One was replaced in the last 25k; not sure about the other, but it looks relatively new)
What I still need to check/replace:
- LCA bushings (they look fine, but I suspect they are original equipment)
- UCA (have JBA's in the box, so these will be replaced soon)
Considering this is an ongoing troubleshooting project for me and my relative newness to the offroad side of vehicles, I'm more curious if anyone has had the same kind of noise and what they found it was. Because it sounds like a quick metal-on-metal clap, usually at the max compression point of the event, I'm hedging my bets on the retaining clips for the pads or UCA/LCA bushings, but as I have found out thanks to this forum, anything is possible! lol
Thanks!
