brake drum tips

Did my rear axles and new brakes. One went on fine after adjusting the screw down to 0 with some finesse, the other just won't go on. The bleeder is open, I've squeezed them together, etc, it just won't fit. I need two extra hands for this. any other brake drum tips you can think of?

What screw are you talking about? You should be more specific. A photo would be nice (if you can take one, but not necessary).

If the adjuster is all the way in and you still aren't able to fit the drum then check the bottom pivot points for the shoes and make sure they are seated correctly. Check the adjuster linkage components as well to verify they are seated on the cutouts on the shoes correctly as well. You might need to disconnect the parking brake cable from the brakes on that side too.

EDIT: If you are reusing your old drums then I would get them turned to get rid of any lip that may be interfering with getting them on.

Good visual reference to make sure you have everything in place correctly.

Hey there I just did my 4runner recently and what I do is place a small board or me on the other hand a small piece of cut PVC on the pistons and place a locking caliper and squeeze it together for about three min. and presto. Double check to make sure you have the pads in correctly because it is easy to get it backwards. I had to lightly hammer one in one time with a rubber mallet.
Good Luck

As for the orientation, I did one at a time so I wouldn't mix it up. So the parking brake levers are on the side closer to the front of the vehicle. I don't seem to have the same style of screw adjusting plate that Timmy does, or even the manual I have. I didn't change anything that's just the hardware I have.

All new springs, pins, etc of course

There are quite a few things wrong with this assembly.

1) The adjuster is not seated into the notch in the brake shoe (this is why the drum won't go on)

2) The return spring is not located in the correct holes (see picture below). I can't tell if the left end of the spring is hooked in the correct place. The right end is definitely not.

I can't see the bottom of the shoes or the bottom springs to tell if those are correct or not.

I also don't recognize that blue spring on the right hand side.

you're absolutely right. not sure how I overlooked the spring. The screw thingy was in there, just looks off in the picture. all snugged up now.

The anchor spring (bottom one) i had hooks facing out vs in like Tim's video, but there are no moving parts down there, I didn't see the need to flip those.

that's for the lever that touches the auto adjust screw wheel. IDK why but my setup looks different that Tim's video where there's the plate on top of the parking brake adjustment lever. On mine I had this plat that mounts to the back of the opposite shoe with a spring. This was exactly how it was on the setup upon removal

All 3rd gen 4Runner's have the same rear drum brake setup except for different size wheel cylinders.

It should look like the attached photo. That photo is of the passenger side so it will be reversed for the driver side.

EDIT: 2001-2002 are different. I stand corrected and will leave my original foolishness intact for others to learn from. Thanks for the knowledge mendozer

My FSM has the same pictures, but that's now how it hooked up on my end. Tim's video even says in the caption that the 01-02 are set up a little differently. Unfortunately I have no other way to verify the setup other than how mine looked coming off the old brakes.

Also my auto adjustor looks a little different, it sits over a pin on the shoe opposite of the brake lever and comes up from behind the adjustment wheel.
