Alternator adjustment bolt sheared off

Hey guys, my belts have been squealing so figured I'd adjust the belts since I've never done it. I tried tightening the one on right side of the alternator only to have it break off. Do I have to get another alternator or is this an easy fix? Can I drive with the thing broken off? The bolt that sits in front of the alternator is fine and I tightened that back up and the car starts up but not sure what to do about driving it to get the part I need if I need to go out and buy it.

You should be fine if you have the "stay" bolt tightened(short bolt that slides in the bracket in an arc), and the main pivot bolt is tightened as well(this needs to be loose to adjust aswell). The long adjuster bolt commonly seizes, lots of anti seize and periodic checks every 2 years are in order, as well as the PS and AC adjusters. So you should be able to pull it apart and just replace the adjuster bolt if that's what you broke and can get the busted section out of the adjuster sleeve nut, if not disregard what I said..

I think I ended up buying the replacement bolt from the dealer for $20. Seems overpriced, but it was a specialty bolt unfortunately.

Thanks, I was watching this video and the guy doesn't mention a 3rd bolt, only 2. The one I broke off is the 2nd bolt that faces the right side of the car while you face it.

Give lowe's a try next time. They have a section for automotive bolts that includes metric bolts as well. Worth a shot, I'm going to bring my bolt in to see if they have something similar.

The long bolt at the very top of the ALT is the pivot bolt, you would want to loosen this before adjusting.
