Electric brake booster upgrade.
What's required to put an electric brake booster from an 01-02 3rd gen into an earlier third gen?
I've tried searching so if you know of threads discussing this please link them instead of telling me to search.

Why do you want to? Do you currently have ABS?

Swapping a Diesel engine. Removing the need for a vacuum pump would be nice.

You still need a vacuum source for the brake booster. The 2001-2002 brake units integrated the abs pump/module with the master vs having them separate for earlier years. What diesel are you going to swap in?
EDIT: To clarify, all 3rd gen 4Runner's use vacuum for the brake booster.

you'll probably want to just use a vacuum pump and not mess with changing the booster, the newer booster is very expensive and still vacuum actuated, I think the 4th gen booster might be electric but it's also very expensive and who knows how hard of a swap that would be, probably not worth it.

Swapping the body, frame, all electronics...
Well, kinda. The brake booster is also the ABS and traction control system in the 01/02's. ABS was changed from 3-channel to 4-channel, so almost all of the brake lines are different, it uses a completely different ABS computer, integrated differently into the dash harness. Heck, it is even (partially) integrated into the engine control system with the sort-of drive-by-wire system for the throttle.
Use a vacuum pump. The diesel motor should already have one - either electric or mechanical.

sounds like it's above my expertise. Considering how the Prius Electric steering is a simple upgrade for older cars, that the electric brake boosters, like the UZJ100 and such would gain some traction as a swap or upgrade.

The issue is that it isn't just an electronic booster, it is a booster, ABS system and traction control system in one unit - which requires a specific set of sensors and computers to run it.

Al the systems that are incorporated into the latest 3rd gens, are TRAC, VSC, ABS, EBD, and BA. Only one ECU does all that.
I was thinking of making this type of a conversion on my diesel Runner, as it would have been really a great achievement to have all those systems on manual transmission and mech diesel engine, but it was not possible with my current setup.
As Charlie mentioned, the hydraulic brake booster from the latest 3gens, is far to complex to be just bolted in. Even tho it's the best of all the vehicle stability control systems, it is integrated into automatics only.
So if yo plan to install it into a manual 4Runner, it is not possible as the logic is designed to work only with automatics.
Component wise, the system consists of the brake booster, a controller under the steering wheel, a few sensors more than the abs system, like the yaw rate sensor, a steering sensor, and an additional box with 3 relays. You will have to exchange all the piping to make it work too.
And as mentioned earlier, the VSC is integrated into pretty much all the other systems - engine control, 4WD control, Cruise Control if you have it, and the combination meter, with all the lights for it.
If you install an electronic diesel engine with the same automatic as the 5VZ, you could make the system work. But if your diesel engine is with a mech pump, then you have to spoof the VSC ECU that it has a connection to and control of the engine, more specifically the engine's throttle body sensor, and RPM sensor.
You could technically create a homemade simple ECU from arduino or raspberry pi to simulate that there the VSC ECU has control over the engine itself, but that further complicates the retrofit, as your choice of the diesel engine is one that at least has control of the transmission - therefor an electronically controlled engine.
