He asked about the filling up for that purge valve but that won't make a difference. It's time. First thing in the morning is usually solid, and 5 minutes off like a quick errand is fine, but anything seemingly 10 minutes to 6 hours makes it fall back into this pattern. I even try sometimes not holding the key as long on a crank just to see if it's truly a factor of sending fuel to the rails vs just "this crank won't work, but the next one will" like with camshaft timing.

the evap code was from the flex hose connecting to the top of the gas tank. When I put the tank back in i thought it didn't seal very well and he agreed, saying it was loose so he put some kind of silicone thing on it to make the boot grab better.

when I say crank over here's what I mean. you turn the key to "start" and usually you hear anywhere from 1-3 "churn" noises before ignition and the big "vroom". I'm hearing 5-8 churning before I give up and re-turn the key again. Then when it does turn over fully it sounds strong. Before the timing belt change it would start a bit rough and "chugg chugg" a bit for a few seconds. But driving is fine. I'm still running a full gas tank in to see true fill up MPG but otherwise it runs smooth. It even had a higher pitch hum when firing up as I got it back from the mechanic, maybe that was from years with an out of spec MAF causing a deeper growl.

so my gas mileage has been about 16 per tank, lower than it should be.

also I've been experimenting...whenever I don't have a cold start, I've been giving the gas pedal a little push during starting...no issues. what that tells my very basic mechanic brain is is has to be something fuel related, despite the system passing all checks from the mechanic.

what are your thoughts?

the gas pedal trick doesn't work anymore. it's gotten worse now To the point of starting up and when it finally kicks over it kinda spurts and "stumbles" into a smooth hum after a few seconds.

Maybe the timing got off again? This was happening just before he found the timing issue. I don't want to take it back, I've sunk 2500 into this, AFTER I spent money on the rebuild mind you. Machine shop was something like 900, parts were 750, a JDM swap would have been half price at this point.

nothing has changed recently. Lately I just crank it longer for like 8-10 seconds to start. I can't think of any other causes and part of me says sell it (there are 3rd gens in my area selling for 9-10k with over 100k more than mine does and I bought mine for 9k in 2015) where another part of me thinks "ah screw it". Is it going to harm the motor starting like this? Other than tracking down some toyota guru and paying more money for diagnosis, I can't fathom what else to do.

I suppose I could try the fuel pressure regulator just because it was at the high end of spec
