98 Limited With 4wd Button

I’ve tried looking it up and can’t find much. I keep reading about lefty, dual case, taco boxes and now I am very interested. But I currently have the limited tcase. I understand how everything works high level, but has anyone “upgraded” tcases with the limited and been able to keep the button?
How does the button actually work? Is there a servo under there?
Sorry, I’ve started messing with my 4Runner and now I have the bug.
