Oh gotcha, I only tightened the ones I could reach. Another reason I used the proper torque wrench. My valve covers weren't (aren't) leaking anywhere but on the passenger side rear corner and that is the bolt that was very loose for whatever reason. I wish I could easily reach them all but better than nothing I reckon. The fact I didn't have any other leaks pointed me to checking the bolts to begin with actually.

Back when I was a rookie a couple of years ago DIY'ing my car to avoid taking it to the shop, I did the valve cover gasket job and thought to myself that the bolts needed to be very tight to "seat correctly." I heard both valve cover snap and knew I was in deep trouble. I had to go to a junkyard to get 2 used covers off another 4Runner and it has been good since. I got very lucky as both covers were only $6 (new were $300+).

Lesson: Use a torque wrench and don't crank on the bolt. It's not supposed to be very tight. In your case since it's leaking - change the rubber gasket. Yeah it's a lot of work, but you already know the meaning of "Do it once, do it right."

Get a new plentum gasket while you're at it. I didn't replace mine but oh well, it's still running fine.

Not sure tearing in to it is the best advice at this point. Been over a week and I've checked the valve covers twice with a white rag. Clean as a whistle.

Looks like just torquing the bolts to spec was my fix and took 5 minutes. If it ever leaks again I'll update this thread, but so far so good.

Eventually I'll need to do the timing belt, water pump, I'll do the VC gaskets then and prob replace the radiator as well, but hoping I can make it to 200k miles for all that.
