Back when I was a rookie a couple of years ago DIY'ing my car to avoid taking it to the shop, I did the valve cover gasket job and thought to myself that the bolts needed to be very tight to "seat correctly." I heard both valve cover snap and knew I was in deep trouble. I had to go to a junkyard to get 2 used covers off another 4Runner and it has been good since. I got very lucky as both covers were only $6 (new were $300+).
Lesson: Use a torque wrench and don't crank on the bolt. It's not supposed to be very tight. In your case since it's leaking - change the rubber gasket. Yeah it's a lot of work, but you already know the meaning of "Do it once, do it right."
Get a new plentum gasket while you're at it. I didn't replace mine but oh well, it's still running fine.
