99 exhaust question

Hi all,

On a 99, are all the tail pipes the same no matter if it’s Cali or Fed emissions?

I found a stainless version from Evan Fischer and wanted to know if it will fit.

Damn pipe rotted off just after the last flange joint. Aaaaargh!

Thanks for the help, and Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah to all!

Scott

Should be the same up to the cat flange. Then it's one or 2 cats. I went to ebay for my exhaust stainless China. Northern stainless on ebay. They bolt on. Work fine walker exhaust rotted off in 5 years.

You can see in my build thread what they look like etc.

If it has a 2bolt flange that turns upwards after the muffler you have a factory style exhaust and the tail pipe is the same 96-02 I think!, maybe someone else will confirm. My tail pipe recently cracked at the muffler, turns out someone put a 2.5" SS Cat back exhaust on it at some point 10+ years ago and the tail pipe slips right into the back of the muffler? No flange, I was able to cut the bad section out and slip it back together and clamp it without issues and now I'm trying to figure out where to find a SS tail pipe that will fit.. That magnaflow system is looking pretty good right now!. Can you add a link to the system you are looking at out of curiosity.

That looks the same as northeastern stainless. Should work fine. Mostly if the tailpipe rust off the muffler is soon to follow.

Looks like a good tail pipe, a little more deformation in the 'mandrel' bends than I like to see, I like those bends to have smooth transitions, not for flow in our case but because I live in a rust belt winter driving for 7months a year and have dried up salt 1/4" thick hanging off the entire lower tailpipe and any lip or deformation collects larger accumulated salt nuggets, we use liquid calcium chloride and rock salt on the roads very little sand unless -30* so pretty extreme conditions. I was going to order a oem tail pipe as they just last longer, but turns out I have an orphaned 2.5" exhaust I can't match up, and any welds to custom make won't last from my experience up here. Price out the Oem and consider it if you live in conditions that use salt.
Edit: Looks like the deformation that bothered me is to clearance the rear crossmember, all the other bends look really good!. Whenever I see those ripples on the inner radius of bends or deep imprints from mandrel bending I run.

I just went through the same thing and went to a shop in Portland a week ago to have a SS muffler and tailpipe welded in. Not sure where in Maine you are but that's an option.

Certainly exceeded the price of your tailpipe from Amazon but I was fed up with everything rotting out so quick or the flanges beginning to leak. While the welds on this new setup will still be vulnerable, it has a 5yr warranty is nice and quiet, and has no more flanges after the cats.

For your 4Runner that should work fine. I cringe every time I see crush bends like that though. On my 91 I gained almost 2 MPG's by going with mandrel bent tubing over crush bends, they were that restrictive.

I see what you guys mean with those bends. Here is northeastern stainless exhaust to compare with. I can also show you what my exhaust tailpipe looks like after a year as I have one hanging in my garage. The flanges are not as nor are the studs

Hi, do you have the part no. for that exhaust from Norteastern? I'm in need of a cat-back exhaust for my 2000 4R SR5 (non-Calif.). I'm looking for stainless steel and quiet/OEM noise level. Thanks! -Jay

Stainless Steel Exhaust System Kit fits: 1996-2000 Toyota 4Runner 3.4L | eBay

I do not know the lifespan of these exhaust. They are stainless steel, however, there are many grades of stainless. These will slowly oxidize and rust as their flanges are normal steel as well.

I am happy with the one on my one rig. As for their cost, if they last 3 to 4 years they beat the walkers that rotted off before I put this on. As my tailpipe made I think 3 years and my muffler made a few months more...:/

Thanks! I was looking at that exact item on eBay. I'll go with that. Thanks for your comments as well about longevity. I don't expect great things at that price but it seems like a good deal.

I know this is an old post but the thread just got revived and I need to clarify this info. The tailpipes are indeed the same Cali vs. Fed. The mufflers are definitely not. Fed mufflers have the downstream sensor bung on the muffler pipe. On Cali. exhausts, the bung is on the cat pipe. The intake pipes are also different lengths, since two cats take more room then just one. So a Cali catback will not work on a Fed truck and vice versa.
