The little plastic piece fell under your camshaft from what I understand.

I don't think theres really a hole or anything down there. It should be reachable.

As far as damage, i would not leave any plastic in the valvetrain. Ultimately it would dissipate into the oil or just circulate in the valve-train. I deff wouldn't want anything but oil lubricating my engine. Can lead to premature wear of engine components.

To your starting issue, sounds like you are getting fuel. Check the easy stuff first. Assuming you disconnected your battery, make sure the battery connections are nice and clean, poor connections there can make it turn over but not start. Spark plug wires, are they in the correct order? Are they pushed in all the way.
Coil packs nice and Tight?

That hole is just an oil passage. Most likely the plastic will end up in the pan and will sit there. It's too big to fit through the pickup screen so it won't recirculate.

There's a few sensors that can cause a no-start condition.

1. Crankshaft sensor - you didn't touch this since it's down near the crank pulley itself.
2. Camshaft sensor - you might have disconnected it thinking it needed to be to replace the knock sensor. Double check this one, it sits on the outside of the timing belt cover just next to the power steering pulley.
3. MAF sensor - you definitely disconnected this one, can be easy to miss since it's far from the engine.

Also make sure the ODB-II diagnostic port is grounded securely and cleanly. This will also cause a non-start condition. I wouldn't go chasing fuel pressure or spark items. They are most likely perfectly fine but instead a sensor signal (or lack thereof) is making the ECU cut the spark.

Thanks all for your help with this. I ended up taking it to my trusted independent mechanic. He got it started by squirting some oil into the cylinders, cleaning off the (1 day old) spark plugs, and then firing it up. Not sure why or how that made such a difference, but not complaining. It was way cheaper and easier than I thought it would be.

So, the piece of plastic is in there for good. Hopefully just floating in the bottom of the oil pan. I'll do an extra couple oil changes after a few hundred miles just I'm case it's somehow contaminating the oil.

Pull the pan if it starts bugging you enough. It might be just chillin' down in the sludge, and you'd have peace of mind.
