Thank you for doing this video! This has made my rig much more pleasant to get in and out of.
I had some things I did in addition to your video that I thought might be useful to share with a larger audience, who may not read what I've posted in my build thread.
I hope you're OK with me copy and pasting the below from my build thread here for others to see. Maybe it will help them.
Also,
@mtbtim
and
@JZiggy
if either of you need a new bumper or two for your personal vehicles let me know and I will drop a couple in the mail for you, free of charge since you did the legwork on figuring this rebuild/mod out. I have extras from the junkyard since I didn't need to use any for experimenting. Let me know if you want any!
Hey
@Unner
this is great info! The bumpers do indeed wear out and the repair kit doesn't address the problem. I think you have a creative solution to it.
Just this past weekend I had to replace the bumpers on my 1st gen but it's easier because the stopper rod isn't permanently connected to the hinge so a new one can just slide on.
I'd be happy to take you up on the offer for some harvested bumpers -- I do need one for my 99 driver's side! Please keep me in mind as well if you find decent cores at the junkyard as I find myself rebuilding these for forum members and friends on occasion.

Yeah
@Unner
, I'll take a bumper or two as well if you want to send them my way.

Interesting that they are easily replaceable on the 1st gens. Also interesting that they used the same part for so long. Must be 30+ years they've been making that little bumper.
I'll send you a PM later this week to work out logistics!

@Unner
, thanks for confirming that the rubber bumpers from the 1997-2011 Camry's door checks are compatible with 3rd gens. Opens up parts availability big time.

It sure does. There were probably 20 Camrys at the junkyard and no 4Runners as usual. If only we could pull parts off American cars! That would be too easy.

I think I have a full set of used ones I pulled off in my toolbox at work. I’ll try to look tomorrow if work is slow.

Awesome!!
I went ahead and bought a few extra kits to have on hand. A few folks have asked about these now. They are fun to do and I’d love to help more people do this mod.
Has anyone recently ordered the replacement fixators from Amazon?
Tim provided links to both the ebay store and amazon product, but as we know with whats going on in Ukraine/Russia, the ebay link is not an option at this time.
The Ebay link says the fixators are a type 1, which fit Toyotas. The Amazon link on the other hand doesnt list a type 1, but a type 8 which syas its also for Toyotas, but looking at the photos they look different than the type 1's.
If anyone has info on this, it would be greatly appreciated!
Are you tired of your doors not staying open for you? If so, this video might interest you. I learned of this repair from
@JZiggy
aka Jordan.
Just a small suggestion - I do know that it is sometimes hard to disconnect connectors, but it is not good practice to use a metal screwdriver to pry the connector from the power window switches, like you demonstrate in the video.
There is constant +12v at that connector, even when the ignition key is not in the ON position of the key cylinder. You could potentially touch the connector pins and short something. I don't think there are that many ground connections, but you could go from a 30minute job to a full day ordeal trying to trace a short.
Also, overtime, wires even tend to corrode while inside the insulation and sometimes they can melt when shorted, and not blow a fuse. It is an extreme case, but i've had it happen to me on a client's HDJ80.
Hope this helps

Hi, my door checker on the front driver side finally gave out(270,000 miles) after using my vehicle delivering packages for two years. I’m wodering if you do rebuild them? I checked Timmy’s YT link for the DIY, but the vendor in Ebay is “away” and “not shipping to the USA” as of the moment. The checked assembly is all in great shape except the worn down sliding plastics.
Tbh, I registered just a while ago on this forum just for this specific issue. I went to 3rd Gen 4R mafia facebook page and with no avail.
I'm in the same boat. The parts aren't available now due to sanctions.....
If there's another source, please anyone post it. That would be awesome. The Toyota ones are available, but man they are silly expensive for what they are.
It's definitely my next project once I get the current one wrapped up.
