Fuel level issue

Hey, I’m having a fuel sender issue that I haven’t been able to figure out yet. Yes, I know I’m new, I did search first, but didn’t see anything describing similar symptoms.

When I first bought my ‘98 SR5, the fuel gauge was stuck at full. The previous owner had replaced the fuel pump without dropping the tank, so I thought this is where things went wrong. When I dropped the tank and moved sender manually, the dash would adjust correctly, and the senders resistance range checked out fine, so I cleaned the sender contacts with contact cleaner and put the tank back in.

Thanks to the PO for the 8mm wrench!

Now the fuel level ranges from full, to about 3/5 when the low level dash light comes on. I don’t understand what’s going on. The sender’s resistance range was in spec and worked fine out of the tank, now I’m wondering if the PO bent the float arm while replacing the fuel pump. Thoughts?

Do you have a Oct 98- early 2001 4Runner?. Check with the dealer to see if your truck VIN falls under a TSB for faulty fuel level sender. In late 98 they added an inclinometer in the dash and a new sending unit for more accurate fuel level but with faulty parts off the factory line ironically. I had to do both sending unit and inclinometer at my local dealer, some needed only the inclinometer chip and mine needed the tank dropped aswell. If not Oct98-early2001 than disregard.

Thanks for the info, but 2/98 is the build date, so unfortunately that TSB wouldn’t apply.
