Stubborn P0773 code won't go away!

Hey peeps, so I tried getting my mechanic to get rid of the P0773 code and it has been a pain with no success.

I would like to say that this code began appearing after my transmission was rebuilt after a Torque Converter failure destroyed my transmission. After it was rebuilt this code became a common occurrence.

I have been living with my CEL staring back at me since October and I have been burning through gas more than usual. It is finally time I did something about it. Now this P0773 code appeared in January of 2020. I would clear it and it would be a few months, then it would pop up, I'd clear it then it would be gone for a few months and then come back. Whenever I use the OBDII scanner and clear for a while then come back (instantly or a day or so).

My mechanic has attempted the following:
  • Clean and check voltage/resistance on terminals.
  • Replace Solenoid E
  • Replaced ECM Computer
  • Removed my transmission pan countless times
  • Replaced transmission filter

I finally got around to purchasing an OBDII Scanner myself so I can clear it and get a better understanding of what is going on. I picked up the ANCEL Scanner that was recommended to me in a previous thread.

When I did the initial scan everything came up green. When I scanned for the codes I got a P0773 but 3 times, I cleared it and then got back 1, cleared it again and got 2 of P0773 Codes.

Is there anywhere in specific I should start looking or with the scanner? I would also like to note that my transmission is missing a bolt or something at the bottom of the casing, one that sits flush against the other portion of the case.

Does your transmission torque converter lockup when in 4th gear and cruising over 45 mph?

There was a thread on here with your symptoms, and the guy had also replaced his e solonoid but finally replacing the torque converter solved his issue.

Any chance you can explain what a lockup feels like? I did notice I get a jank or a shutter when I’m driving. If I’m at a stop and I accelerate it will some times shutter when getting up to speed.

I did see that somewhere but I haven’t considered it. My TC broke and metal got into the tranny prompting the rebuild. If all else fails I might have the TC replaced and see if that works.

It will feel very similar to another shift point and you'll see an rpm drop. Starting from a stop count your shifts and the extra "shift" in 4th gear is the torque converter clutch locking up. It should happen around 45-50 mph in 4th gear your torque converter will lock up as long as the throttle isn't pressed too far.

I will check for this in the morning.

Would the greasing the drive line have anything to do with the jank or clunk feeling when shifting?

On a relatively flat surface at 50 mph constant your torque converter should be locked. If you press the gas pedal gently you will notice that the rpms would go up a little but the speed does not, now let off the gas enough to reduce speed and you will feel it unlock then step on the gas gently'again and you will feel it locking up again.

I doubt it, but it could be a possibility. Most people with driveshaft greasing problems (either too much or too little) seem to make noise when going around corners or hitting bumps.

That’s kind of weird. When I shift I get a shutter which almost feels like a pull.

So this morning I was able to accelerate to 45-50 and I didn’t feel a shift. I will reconfirm this after my drive home.

I will say that when I hit around 60 I felt the usual gear change shutter but I’m not sure if that’s the TC or the tranny going into 4th.

At and above 50mph you should be able to slowly roll on the throttle and the tach should move in sync with the mph.

If you give it throttle and the RPMs rise instantly and the mph rises slowly afterwards your TC is not locking up.

Count your shifts from a stop and you will have your answer. You were likely in 4th gear and then when the torque converter locked up it started to shutter.

Sounds good. I will check in the morning and let everyone know. Is it bad if the TC locks up and shutters?

I tested it out this morning on my way to work and the TC is locking up. I would get to 50, let it coast (I would de-accelerate at this point), apply gas, rpms would go up but mph would not change for a bit then it would “shift” and accelerate.
