I'm in Santa Monica. Reasonably priced independent auto repair is fast disappearing from this side of town due to gentrification and high commercial rents.
For big (= expensive) jobs, I recommend K+H Import Repair** in Canoga Park. I had them do the timing belt/WP/valve cover gaskets recently and am quite pleased.
But Canoga Park is too far to go for small jobs.
The only local shop I have used, that I like, (but only for brake/suspension service) is Samo Wheel and Brake (see Howard) in Santa Monica. But it's not 'cheap'...just good, IMO.
** EDIT(2022 October): There appears to have been an ownership change at K+H--went by and all new people working there.
arg, dammit. I was worried about this when moving here.

I've gotten good reports about Lopez Auto (17th and Broadway) in Santa Monica.
I sent a neighbor there and she was satisfied...fuel injector issue on a Scion Xb. I'll stick with my recommended K+H in the Valley** for big jobs, and try to do the small jobs myself.

i don't have any issues at the moment and still have another 10k miles on my free service from the dealer. just wanted to try to sort out where i'll go after the warranty is up.
