OEM Roof Rack and Crossbars

Hello,

I am wondering which cargo boxes (yakima, thule, etc) fit the OEM bars? Also, can anyone give insight to any rooftop baskets? I would be looking for a half basket since the other half would be taken up by the cargo box.

Cheers.

If you are going to put any substantial weight (150ish), I would strongly suggest a set of aftermarket crossbars from a reputable mfr. or fabricator.
The OEM bars are rather "bouncy" when loaded up. And the usable real estate is barely enough for a typical 16 cu. ft. cargo box - let alone a basket next to it.

To add to this, the OEM cross bar ends are plastic and can break with significant weight.

A reasonably loaded roof box should be no problem though.

Basically most roof boxes will fit just fine. I have a very long (and now pretty old) Yakima space booster that doesn't allow the hatch to open, but most of the modern boxes will work just fine unless maybe you are going HUGE in size.

I have way overloaded the factory cross bars esp when you consider they are plastic. The other slight issue is that with a basket it sits up higher. I plan to make my own cross bars this spring as my current 4r did not come with the cross bars and local wreckers want 50 for them.
these might help me or others thinking of building thier own cross bars or anchors for racks

Get some mounting feet like the ones pictured below, and extruded 1x2 t-slot.

Add extra OEM cross bars, I run 4 of them and I think you can fit 5or6. Go to the wreckers and keep the end caps you take off, I have found they need to be warmed up before removing and installing or the tab breaks being this old and the conditions they see.

Good idea for distributing the weight, but if the cargo box mounting locations are recessed into the box's base,
the extra bars may prevent the clamps from correctly grabbing the intended bars.
This will also do nothing to increase space for additional accessories.

Running a narrow basket (24"ish a la Skinny Warrior) and a full width cargo box
will almost certainly require a near 60" wide set of crossbars.

Yes, those are mine. I've been testing them out since summer on my 3rd Gen. I'm going to be releasing a 3rd Gen & 5th Gen crossbar kit in a couple weeks. The 4th Gen will be right behind those.

I made my own crossbars from some flatbar, and 1"×2" rectangular tube. Super simple, super strong, and probably a little more heavy then needed. When wheeling it holds the big gas can, firewood, hi-lift, and traction boards. After trips to home depot it has held maybe 200 lbs of wood. It mounts using the OEM stainless inserts in the OEM rails.

I've only used my roof rack for mattress hauling 2 times but i'm sure its not very strong especially since its 20 year factory plastic. Upgrading to metal cross bars would be great at least.

Everyone,

Thank you for the feedback. I had come across the stock cross bars and system in general is not viable. However, I am going to try it as I have found the Thule Sport cargo box fits the bars. I am only storing clothing in their and some bags. It will not exceed 25lbs. Now, if I plan on changing my plans I will for sure switch them out. I hope everyone has a nice day.
