Yes, as long as they are both abs equipped, not that I've seen Non ABS 4R, and they are the same on both sides except the backing plate and even the backing plate can be drilled out to accept the bell crank. There was bearing change in 01-02.

The only things to watch out for are ABS vs non-ABS and the brake line mount points. The ABS is the only deal breaker in my opinion. I swapped my 2001 axle to a 1997 e locker axle a few years ago. The brake lines for my 2001 had an extra mount point that the 1997 axle did not have so I used a zip tie. The brakes have not had any issues; just to not be surprised when you see this.

That's an issue for 01/02 vs. 96-00 rear brake lines - not an ABS vs. non-ABS issue. The 01/02 have a 4-channel ABS system instead of the earlier 3-channel system and use an extra rear soft brake line.

I did not say the ABS and brake lines were a single issue. The "and" in my sentence separated them as seperate items. I'm not an Internet idiot. Please check your reading comprehension before trying to correct other people. Before you try to correct the OP for saying "rear axles" I am sure he understands that a 4Runner only has one rear axle per vehicle.

Don't get those panties in a bunch... I never called you an internet idiot - though if you take a clarification personally, maybe you are not used to the internet?

When someone asks if the rear axles from a 96 fit a 99 we can assume he is referring to the 2 rear axle shafts in the axle housing that connect to the 3rd member, and the only concern he should have is whether it has abs rotors for those years. He didn't ask if a complete axle assembly fit. I know assuming is not wise, but the OP was pretty clear IMO. Note that I mention the axles are the same for both sides, deep breath everyone.
