Front suspension travel

Anybody have any ideas on the most you can get out of our front suspension without going to long travel? I guess what I’m asking what the max suspension travel is out of the front. I don’t really want to mess with going long travel because I don’t want to run spacers in the rear or have to get fiberglass fenders or any of that jazz. I’ve read that JBA uca’s give you more travel is there any equivalent in the lower control arms that would give us more travel and that maybe has a better lbj design? Or is there no real difference in anything we could change without going wider because the cv axle maxes out travel? Just lookin for some info/opinions

Front suspension travel

According to eimkeith: why Body Lift? – eimkeith.com

Quote:
so basically, a 2” suspension lift and a 1” (1.25” in my situation) body lift nets more suspension travel and lower COG than that of a 3” suspension lift, with the break-over clearance of a `4” suspension lift.

So this overrides/takes into account shock compressed length vs. extended length vs. installed length and coil bind of the spring? I assume those would have some effect on suspension travel.

The search for max travel with stock length arms is "mid-travel" in the terms used here. Get to searching!

Options include:
- body lift and bump stop modifications for increase up travel
- upper arms for increased droop travel

You'll end up limited by the CV joint articulation limits and shock travel.

Thanks for the replies all, I’ll look into mid-travel since. I had heard of that but wasn’t sure exactly what it meant. I have a 1” body lift already and am a big fan of @work and products. As money permits I’ll hopefully have all of his goodies haha. Just brainstorming on what I want to do next for the front end. Good to know and confirm that the cv axles will end up limiting travel in the end but with the 1” BL and some modifications to the bump stops I should be able to get some decent travel.

So is there any LCA’s that would be beneficial in the situation I’m looking for? If not I assume best would be just to build up the oem with new bushings and eimkeith’s reinforcements

Tacoma front sway bar

You could also look at using the 2004 Tacoma front sway bar. It allows for more drop. I think it's installed on the TRD models only.

I'm considering this upgrade.

Not sure if it’s helpful to you or not, but check out DuroBumps 5.25” bump stops set.

Sway bar does not limit down travel but limits the amount that left and right can be at different heights. For best front flex disconnecting the sway bar is recommended.

If you do, use Super Pro or Whiteline bushings. Either will provide free movement of the LCA as opposed to the OEM which lock the LCA in place and movement is by twisting the rubber.

I’ve got white lines currently just didn’t put them on because I haven’t taken the LCA’s off yet. Figured at the same time I’d do the reinforcements.

I’ll keep the regular one on for now. I’m planning on taking it off permanently whenever I get coilovers with valving adjusters. Had it off for a while and the ride was softer will definitely keep it off when I could adjust the stiffness on the actual shocks.

Fwiw this is something I've been wondering for a while and can't seem to get an answer on. Everyone says "just replace the bushings" but with how much of a pain it is to get the arms out AND the bushings too, you might as well just swap it out for a new set if you find your time valuable. Which sucks because theres definitely some options available, just nobody with any experiences on them. If you come across something I'd be interested in seeing it
If you were curious, in regards to UCAs, JBA offers a very nice pair for our vehicles that net another +1in of droop, with zerk fittings on both the ball joint and bushings too. Supposedly make highway driving a dream, too. Can't wait to put mine on
