Want to Upgrade to 01-02 Tail Lights

I got a passenger tail light off a 2002 4Runner from the scrapyard for $10 and love the cleaner look rather than the pre-2000 tails. Installing it to see how it looked, I discovered the reverse socket is too big to fit the 02 tail light. To rewire, can I just cut the original wire and rewire the 02 wire for the reverse light to work or do I have to do something else to make it work? Soon I will get the driver side tail light.

Swap the harnesses to the '01/'02. Takes 5 minutes to access them from inside the quarter panel trim.

^^^ Even if you DID tap in a new connector, how would it fit in the tail light housing? The 01-02 reverse lights are a 2825 bulb instead of a 7440 and the hole they lock into is much smaller as a result.
It's a shame, I too love the clear tail lights but ultimately I made the switch back so I could have bright reverse lights.

I would've just cut the reverse light housing off another 4Runner and rewired it to mine but now knowing I can swap the entire housing, I will just do that instead.

other than looks, is there an advantage to this ?
If so then maybe if I find a 99 or 2000 I will swap the tail lights from my 2001.
Sure another buyer wont notice, this 2001 is rough as it is.

The junkyards I went to had cut the wire harnesses. You can order the correct ones from Toyota if your yards are like here where they’re all cut
