Front CV Axle Seal

So I changed my Lower BJ's last week and today I noticed the front driver's side axle seal leaking where the CV would enter the front diff. I've tried to find some part numbers on here but have had no luck. Does anyone know the part number or the correct term for the seal? Is this easy to change (special tools ect.) ?

The dust cover part# is 41336-35020.

Here is a little CV DIY to help you out further.

Its not the dust cover. There is an actual seal in there. Its a super easy job. Mine went out a few weeks ago and leaked oil all over. I may still have the bag it came in from toyota but if you call you local dealer ship they should be able to pull it up for you . Just say is the front drivers side axle seal on the diff. It was $12

This thread has PN's a few posts down. Not sure if they are right but when you call the dealer if may be re assuring.

Front axle seals Replacement. - TTORA Forum

BE CAREFUL pushing the new seal in. It doesnt have a stop so you can push it in too far and it will leak again. I used a long extension and slowly tapped it in. I left just a little of the outer rim sticking out.

Since J-money$$$ has replaced many more CVs than moi, he is probably spot on with this one. Mine was leaking at the cover (previous work for the OP is where someone installed it incorrectly) but it is probably the seal indeed.

Are you talking about that little brass plate/metal that is on the inside of the cv joint? Thats what im calling the dust cover. That does not hold in the oil, its just supposed to keep mud and what not from hitting the seal.

If you have oil leaking out of the diff from where the cv joints go into it has to be the seal.

However i could understand if the dust cover was on backwards and keeping the cv from fully seating in the diff perhaps you could get some oil leaking out. But in all honesty if it the dust cover was missing all together it still shouldnt leak oil.

ANd Yeah I have replaced a few cv's LOL.

If you do the seal, use an old screwdriver to pop the old one out

Went to the dealer today and hopefully ordered the right part. The guy at the parts counter was pretty clueless. I literally had to show him the correct part I needed because he had no clue. He kept tying to tell me it was the dust cover I needed. I pretty much told him that this is not going to hold back the diff oil from leaking out. Finally after viewing an exploded front diff on his computer we came up with this part number 9031147012 which hopefully is the right part. I also order the small CV boot clamps 9094901221 so I can finaly fix my leaking boots. The question is what tool is needed to clamp these things down? Anyone got a pic of it?

So my driver side seal is leaking. Had a pool of oil on my skids the other day, pulled them off, degreased eveything, drove a bit and realized it wasnt from the oil pan...

Replaced my front cv's about a month ago, just got my 99 sr5 from the dealership because my front wheel bearing, on the driver side, went out and I figured with 207k on the odometer I might as well do both...

$950 in goddam parts, and $650 in goddam labor. ****ing highway robbery, considering I got quoted $1300 for parts and labor.

So, Ive got parts numbers, but no clear consensus on insertion depth. Is it just inside the output, or pushed all the way in against the diff carrier?

Id love to start my own thread, but I apparently dont have enough posts to do so, and am not going to spam threads with useless drivel to get enough.

I would appreciate any input, guys. Its getting to the point I can disassmble my front end by memory...

Make sure you get the TOYOTA oil seals. Any other brands will or have a potential to bend while you tap it in to the diff. Toyota seals have a steel metal frame while other makes have iron.

Also get a seal driver to get it in right.

Any seal from a reputable brand (SKF, Timken, National, etc..) should be fine. In this application there is nothing special about the OEM Toyota seal. I know the local dealers here will charge $20-30 CDN for an OEM oil seal.

Just make sure you use a seal driver, or atleast something to get it in straight because improper installation is what kills seals. Ideally it should be driven in at the original insertion depth, but it's not too crucial as there is quite a bit of leeway on the corresponding CV shaft sealing surface. However, if there is wear on the shaft like a small groove from the old seal then you might want to adjust the insertion depth accordingly to not get chewed up.

.. 6 years later.. But better late than never.
I need to replace my diff seal where my CV comes in.. got it quoted out for ~$650.. seemed a bit high for a seal where you don't even have to crack into the diff housing to replace.. so i decided that I am going to do it myself.. anyways.. I found a video at "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh1BK5--KrU" in which the guy says his service manual calls for 5.5mm of insertion depth.. His model is a 3rd gen.. Irregardless, DO NOT push it all the way to the carrier. When you remove the CV youll be able to see a lip inside the diff housing.. This is roughly how far the seal should be put in on the 3rd gens.. Another video I found at "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUOp3zfQsB0" shows them replacing the seal on an 07 fj cruiser ~21:50 in the video (I'd assume the process is about the same) but they put the seal flush with the diff housing. I wouldn't lose my mind over insertion depts, just don't shove the seal all the way in the dif housing.
