2000 engine into a 98 ok ?
so a complete 98 with a dead non rebuildable engine and a 2000 engine, complete. Both V6 auto 4wd.
As far as I know, if I have both the complete engine of the 2000 I should be able to just switch that to the 98....with what I understand might have to change a few things like MAF and harness....but all the rest should fit shouldnt it ?
The dead is at 185k, the good 2000 is at 235k and compression etc is perfect, runs very well, timing belt 15k ago still in the car that is being parted out... t-boned wrecked and not reparable

some differences:
- 2000 has multi-mode 4WD
- 2000 has a different ADD sensor / switch
- location of the charcoal canister is in the rear
- i think, 2000 has transmission updates

true, but im asksing about if the engines will bolt in, like the engine from the 2000 bolt to the 98 tranny etc. since they are both automatics and how many "accessories" from one engine switches to the other .....like is it just plug and play ? Or am I looking at harness differences, maf's, throttle bodies, throttle diffferences.

there was a change in the air filter box and the valve body in 1999. but the A340F housing remained the same. the pn for the throttle body assy remained the same from 1996 to 2000
iirc, it was in the 1999 Limited that the multiplex communication system was introduced so there will be some differences in the wiring.

98 wire harness is unique and might or might not work in a 2000.
your best bet is to make sure the engine wire harness and body wire harness/drivers side block are the same years. Some differences in the park/neutral safety switch and the ignition. Everything will power up but it might not crank. the plugs are all the same but in 98 they add'ed a couple of wires and then in 99 they moved those wires. I think if you really wanted to get into the wire diagram and re-pin somethings it might be ok. the clusters are different as well between 98/99.
and as you guessed it yes MAF is different, you can re-pin MAF and use 99 and up air box/MAF if you want. super easy 5 min job.
the easiest path is really just to pull the engine and swap it into the truck you want to keep, don't move any wires unless they are in burnt or otherwise hoses up. the engines/trans are exactly the same, you can even swap engine mounts if you want. 96-98 5vz had different engine mounts, the 99 and up engine mounts have less vibration IMO.
if you need help just PM me, I have swapped a lot of stuff around and made some terribly bone headed assumptions. I have some hard fought knowledge and I'm willing to help you avoid my mistakes.

thanks,
the 2000 would go into the 98....if this does happen....waiting to see if offer accepted on dead 98 4runner. I acatually offered what they were asking, but I think they are now thinking of fixing it themselves. Was told the 98 grossly overheated and the shop where they took it said the engine is done. It is sitting in the shops back parking lot.....dead.
I would just assume that most electricals from the 98 engine I would swap to the 2000 engine so 2000 engine in 98 body.. The 2000 would not come with the maf, throttle body, p/s pump, alternator, starter or ac compressor so would have to switch those over from the 98 engine and then install the "2000" back into the 98. Those parts are currently on the 2000 engine and I have heard it run, but the seller is not including those parts at agreed price, but I could buy those if needed..The seller, a guy that parts out yota's said that everything interchanges from one engine to another and looking at lots of part numbers, that seems true.So the 98 harness would be used with the 98 electrical engine parts....does that make sence ?
what else electrical and harness wise would have to come off the dead 98 engine. I just kind of assumed it would be like switching out a long block.

They are the same mechanically. Just swap over the whole harness. I have a 1999 engine in a 1996. Oh, the exhaust manifolds may be different.

I swapped a 99 engine into my 97 truck. Everything on the engine side uses the same connectors so if you are just swapping engines, you shouldn't need to change the harness at all. At least in my experience, I didn't need to.

I think... we can sum it up
you can unplug the electrical connections from the engine/trans on 96-00 trucks and just swap the engine + trans over. no problem.
there are 2 large wiring harness in the truck
1. engine wire harness, goes thru the firewall on the drinkers side and hooks up to the ECU behind the glove box.
2. body wire harness, goes thru the fire wall on the captains side and hooks up to the body fuse box on the lower left.
These wire harness do not just swap around between years (99,00 are the same) other years not the same.
you will have to swap over injectors from ded truck hopefully not toasted?
@ T4R2014
brings up a good point, if either of these trucks are cali emission( have 2x cats ) the headers are different and the auto trans dipstick is also different on cali trucks to clearance those headers and downpipe. so... hopefully both trucks are federal or cali but not mismatched.
your good I think, just don't mix and match wire harness.

1st, thanks for your replys.....after reading your other post about MAF's, I think I will make that switch...reading threads on it looks easy.....98 MAF over tripple the price of the 99 and newer and better air low.
I thought the injectors interchangeable ( pre 99 to after 99) as long as all 6 are replaced, I have some rebuilt ones sitting on my shelf that were for another project, the newere ones,, but no longer have that one....how come I would have to switch them ? Was under the impression newer ones would fit into the older ones and were an improvent.. I thought the connectors were the same......are they so different that fuel rails etc have to change...i thought I remeber reading about some performance ones guys use when they supercharge...and they fit all years 96-2002..I could be wrong
will also convert to heated mirrors, they are really helpful here...and the center console swap....same guy that has motor has all the stuff to do all the mods, including the maf and airbox
do motor mounts interchange, I thought you said one style was better than the other as far as vibration.. ( style or year type/style)
now for these guys to make up thier mind if they want to really sell the 98....its a limited, tan leather, locker, 185k....just dead motor. My last conversation with him yesterday was....yes I really want to sell it and pay off the shop bill but I might just put a new engine in and am waiting for an estimate on that......arggg
if nothing else im learning more about these different year 4runners and this thread might help others in the future
thanks again for your help...ill back off on more questions till I find out if im doing this or not, but your info has helped a lot in letting me know this is able to be done
thanks

You'll be good. Closely check things - PS idle up, exhaust manifolds, swap harness, etc.
You can change over to the '99+ MAF and airbox by re-pinning the '98 MAF connector if you want.

I'd focus on getting it running right using the stock wiring and parts before adapting parts from any other years. That being said, this kind of swap is nothing crazy. It is done all the time nowadays. I wouldn't worry. Are you really that dissatisfied with your 2001? I think these years have a little better NVH refinement when stock. Plus you get 4 channel ABS.

I'm not 100% sure if you can just mix and match injectors? I have always stuck to the rule = whatever year ECU you have = use those years injectors.
96-98 used brown, 99-02 used red/maroon
you can see a good shot of the old style motor(96,97) mounts here
https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3356856-post139.html
98 -> 02 are the newer style mounts, yes IMO the newer style seems to have less vibration from engine to body.
you can use either style, the rubber isolator's are different part numbers so just be careful when you replace them. your probably good since you past the 97 cutoff I would think.

The 96-98 and 99-02 injectors are the same flow rate an interchangeable. Just don't mix and match the sets together. I took the red/maroon ones off my JDM engine and put the older silver body style on with no issue. There was no change to the fuel rail or lower intake manifold at all from 96-02.
