Weird brake issue, 3rd gen

A couple of weeks ago, while backing up in my 3rd gen, I notice the brake pedal had a significant amount of resistance, while lacking stopping power. It went away, but resurfaced now in both reverse and drive. Checked fluid levels and all are in normal operating range. When applying pressure to brakes, there is a significant amount of resistance, followed by a gradual release of the backpressure, then the brakes finally begin to apply.

Checked vacuum hose to brake booster and found no apparent leaks. Is the brake booster suspect, or should I be looking elsewhere? It's a 97 limited 4WD with 270k miles. Thanks in advance for any sage advice.

I don't have any personal experience with this issue but I have tried to chase down other brake issues in the past and its very aggravating.

Sounds like the brake booster check valve. I had the same thing happen to me and it was the check valve. 5 minute repair and 20ish bucks for the part.

I believe that is a Feature of this trucks! All vehicles are different, especially these, haha.

Mine always has been 'low', yet if depressed enough it will grab on enough to actuate the antilock system, so i know it works as intended.
