Very well said. People these days will give up literally every last liberty they have purely because it's convenient - "convenience will be our downfall" as I frequently say.
Novels like 1984, On A Pale Horse, Industrial Society And Its Future, etc. becomes ever more relevant everyday, and everyone seems to realize it, but you're a bad guy if you acknowledge it. Crazy how that works, if only there were prominent novels and intellectuals to warn people of exactly this. But the politcians that are most guilty of these points have promised that they dont exist, and people eat it up without thinking - like how those who instill the most tyranny will be the first to try and tell you it's all a fallacy.

Fine, I'll play nice, provide some anecdotes, and shake my fist in the air.

3rd gen prices are getting pretty cracked out but I actually think they're going to stay up for the most part. It's a desirable truck based SUV (which is rare now) that a lot of people had fond memories of throughout their lifetime. For me, a 3rd gen was my first vehicle. It's becoming an iconic design that is still super durable. Over the last few years, the ones owned by normal people who just change fluids seem to be atrophying. Enthusiast owned ones that have been taken care of are more rare and are becoming coveted. The generation that grew up desiring 90s/00s cars is now coming into career stability and surplus income. Desirable 90s/00s cars are up in value heavily across the board. Overlanding is becoming super trendy and the 3rd gen can be a cool daily/overlander still. It has a smaller footprint than probably any body on frame SUV recently made. There's all sorts of rational and emotional reasons as to why they could go up. I think values will fluctuate with general economic conditions but I don't think clean, well running examples are going to be sold for $2.5k or going to the junkyard.

Seems to be the same for used parts, and new as well.
My 99 4cylinder 2WD got totaled and I got 9600 for it. It had 190k..Im sure I could have gotten 12 for it before the accident. I bought it for 9900 14 years ago with 70K on it...so I did ok I guess. Now I have a 2021.

Basically what jubsz said, he briefly hit every point I would say. It's not just 4runners by any means, look at practically any 4x4 and they're all following a similar trend, some worse than us - like XJs. The Doug DeMuro Tax hit them hard
Hell most cars are going for way more than they should. JDM market is f*cked beyond belief and has been for a while. I think the pandemic contributed greatly to it through a lot of different ways, but even ignoring the elephant in the room it seems like many people are realizing that it's much more cost efficient to upkeep a car than buy a new one at 150k. But the problem is many cars have largely been crap for the past 10-15 years, at least in one way shape or form, and cars before that get more and more scarce every year. Similarly many find they look better and are much more versatile - lots of people don't like things often forced upon us; like unibody designs, ultra low ground clearance, super tight fenders that don't allow for bigger tires, those dumb giant grilles, etc. While some of these are regulation induced and some are purely driven by style, many younger people regardless find it inferior to options we had previously (and rightfully so I dare say.) Not many people 20-30 years old wants some crossover CVT bullshit.
Also with the UN twisting everybody's arm to go ditch gasoline powered cars I think that has a good portion of individuals worried about future options and would rather stick with what they have - but like you said that's a different topic for a different board

My opinion is that new cars seem to be disposable like everything else nowadays. I think its weird to see younger people have cars they arent passionate about, like it's just another thing they will toss out some day soon.

Bit for me it was either a new rugged 4x4 that meet my needs and paid $600+ a month, or gone with a proven model and pay a few hundred every year for maintenance and repairs.

I fell in love with the 3rd gen when they came out, high school days for me. So when I found my 3rd gen while looking for a 4x4 it was an easy decision.

Initially it was supposed to be for hunting, fishing, and work. But I daily it now and look forward to keeping it maintained.

In fact, now I think it would be very profitable to open your own gas station, because while gasoline is now expensive, then you do not risk anything. The only problem is how to open and where you can find suppliers. But I know one site where they help with advice on organizational issues, and I think that the suppliers would also help. So if you have a desire to open a gas station, or any other business, then visit the site and ask for help.
