Toyota Remanufactured Steering Rack

Has anyone had luck with remanufactured OEM steering racks? I've found brand new ones online for $500 but it would take 1-2 weeks to get here. I called a couple local dealerships and they said $500 was below their cost on a new one but one told me that they had Toyota remanufactured racks for a little over $500+core charge that they could get to me tomorrow. It's the same part number with a '-84' on the end.

Just checked ...McGeorge has new 44250-35041 for $506 and remanufactured 44250-02151-84 for $339. Think new will be a better choice

I'd spend the extra $$$ on new. They are probably the same quality, but if I'm going to put a new rack in it I feel like OEM new makes me feel the best about it.

Decided not to take a chance on the reman. Ordered a new one from a dealership website that's a couple hours from here for $498+shipping. Hopefully the shipping is fast.

Hopefully it's just before: leaking fluid, after: not leaking fluid. Haha.

It's the person formally known on here as CaptSoto. I think he got banned before and made a new account. I wish the mods would lock the 3rd gen section from him since all he does is give 4th gen advice and part numbers in the 3rd gen section. Just know that if he says something it's probably wrong, and if he posts a part number it's definitely not compatible with a 3rd gen.

Toyota Remanufactured Steering Rack

So I was reading around and saw some ppl talk about reman'd racks from CVJ in Colorado. They want $575 + shipping ($50-$70) and I have to pay to ship my rack to them probably another $50 a least. So close to $700 at the end of the day. Plus the hassle of being charged a $250 core charge and having to return my old rack back. Other places I found online are similar too.

I found that I can get a NEW OEM rack from Lakeland Toyota for $726 which includes shipping and tax. AND maybe I can sell my rack back to someone who remans them?

Just thinking, why would anyone go reman'd if new OEM was only a little bit more?

McGeorge Toyota sells a new rack for less than 600 shipped

I forget where she got it, one of the local parts store chains? But my wife had lousy service out of a reman rack. Took a worn leaking original rack after 20 years and 250K miles off her '96, put in a nice clean shiny rebuilt rack, and it lasted maybe a year before it was leaking again. Even if they warrantied it, it's not worth the considerable effort to swap a fresh rebuilt rack in that often.

After that, she got a new one from Toyota, it's lasted many years since then. I learned from her experience when my 99's rack started leaking from the steering shaft earlier this year and put a new Toyota rack on. Only about 4K miles on it so far, but it's working perfectly. I replaced the pressure and return lines while I was at it as well.

Funny, seems like a lot of people this year are replacing their steering racks, myself included
Toyota or bust. I don't think I've seen a single person post a good thing about a reman'd rack, but I've certainly seen dozens say poor things about them. The $350ish Toyota charges is a pretty good deal - especially when you consider 50% of that cost can be attributed to the new ITREs and bushings it comes with
Paying nearly double for a reman doesn't make much sense to me

I bought a remanufactured steering rack and it leaked. I bought OEM and returned the remanufactured.

I had a new OEM rack installed in 2015. Still fine, no leaks, change P/S ATF every 2 or 3 years.
